二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Bright blue Citi Bikes are becoming a fine sight in the New Yorker street. New Yorkers are gradually getting used to more pedaling(骑车的) passengers on those blue Citi Bikes. But what about local bike shops ? Is City Bike booming at their expense? At Gotham Bikes in Tribeca, a manager who gave his name as "Ben W." said the shop has seen an increase in its overall sales due to the bike-share program. "It's getting more people on the road, more people learning about the sport and getting involved," he said. An employee at Danny's Cycles in Gramercy said Citi Bike is a good option for people in a city famed for its traffic jams and aggressive drivers. "They can try out a bike without buying one:' James Ryan said.

Rentals are not a big part of the business at either Gotham Bikes or Danny's Cycles. But for Frank's Bike Shop, a small business on Grand St., the bike-share program has been bad news. Owner Frank Arroyo said that his rental business has decreased by 90% since Citi Bike was launched last month. Arroyo's main rental customers are European tourists, who have since been drawn away by Citi Bikes.

However, Ben said the bike-share is good for bike sales at his shop. "People have used the bike-share and realized how great it is to bike in the city, then decide that they want something nicer for themselves," he noted.

Christian Farrell of Waterfront Bicycle Shop, on West St. said at first he was concerned about bike-share, though, he admitted, "I was happy to see people on bikes."

Farrell's early concerns were repeated by Andrew Crooks, owner of NYC Velo, at 64 Second Ave. "It seemed like a great idea, but one that would be difficult to put into use:' Crooks said of Citi Bike. He said he worried about inexperienced riders' lack of awareness of biking rules and strong negative reaction from non-cyclists. However, he said, it's still too early to tell if his business has been impacted (影响) .

While it's possible bike-share will cause a drop in business, Crooks agreed that the idea is a positive step forward for New York City.

1What is the author's chief concern about the increasing use of Citi Bikes in New York?

    A. Whether local bike shops will suffer.

    B. How non-cyclists will respond to it.

    C. Whether local bike businesses will oppose it.

    D. How the safety of bike riders can be ensured.

2What happened to Gotham Bikes as a result of the bike-share program?

    A. It found its bike sales unaffected.

    B. It changed its business to rentals.

    C. It saw its bike sales on the rise.

    D. It rented more bikes to tourists.

3Why is the bike-share program bad news for Frank's Bike Shop?

    A. Its customers have been drawn away by Citi Bikes.

    B. It cannot meet the demand of the bike-share program.

    C. Its bike prices have to be lowered again and again.

    D. It has to compete with the city's bike rental shops.

4What is the general attitude of the local bike shops towards Citi Bike?

    A. Doubtful. B. Negative.

    C. Uninterested. D. Approving.

  • 22、When Matty Sallin was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got an interesting assignment in electronics class: Create something for the household. He decided to create an alarm clock.

“Everybody has to deal with these every day, and they are extremely unpleasant!" he says. He asked different people what they’d like to wake up to instead of a clanging, noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon.”

So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon rather than sound to wake someone up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because it uses halogen light bulbs(卤素灯泡)instead of a flame for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes.”

Just a few easy steps are required to set the “alarm.”

“What you do is to put a couple of frozen pieces of bacon in the night before,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs,” he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the pig nose.

“So instead of an alarm or a beep or a radio, you smell yourself awake,” says Sallin. “Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”

When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. “I wanted to make an elevator in my back yard and a special tree house,” he says. “But I never really thought I’d be called an inventor!”

【1】Why did Sallin choose to create a new alarm clock?

A.His classmates had no alarm clocks.

B.His alarm clock in use was out of fashion.

C.Many people disliked the noisy alarm.

D.Many people had difficulty in waking up.

【2】In what way is Sallin’s alarm clock special?

A.It wakes people up with the smell of bacon.

B.It warns people of the danger of burning.

C.It can also be used as a lamp.

D.It is very small in size.

【3】The pig nose on the alarm clock is used _______.

    A.to cook the bacon

    B.to let the smell out

    C.to sound the alarm

    D.to blow the flame.

【4】What do we know about Sallin?

A.He decides to make more alarm clocks.

B.He has a special gift for clock designing.

    C.He always forget the time.

D.He showed an interest in invention at an early age.

  • 23、The latest beliefs are that the main purposes of sleep are to enable the body to rest, allowing time for repairs to take place and for tissue to be regenerated(再生). Lack of sleep, however, can compromise the immune system, cause depression and promote anxiety.

For many people, lack of sleep is rarely anything of choice. Some have problems getting to sleep, others with staying asleep until the morning. Despite popular belief that sleep is one long event, research shows that, in an average night, there are five stages of sleep. In the first light stage, the heart rate and blood pressure go down and the muscles relax. In the next two stages, sleep gets progressively deeper. In stage four, usually reached after an hour, the slumber is so deep that, if awoken, the sleeper would be confused and disorientated. It is in this state that sleep-walking can occur, lasting no more than 15 minutes. In the fifth stage, the rapid eye movement (REM) stage, the eyes move constantly beneath closed lids as if the sleeper is looking at something. During this stage, the body is almost paralysed(瘫痪的). This REM stage is also the time when we dream.

Sleeping patterns change with age. One theory for the age-related change is that it is due to hormonal changes. The temperature rise occurs at daybreak in the young, but at three or four in the morning in the elderly. Age aside, it is estimated that roughly one in three people suffer some kind of sleep disturbance. Causes can be anything from pregnancy, smoking, and stress to alcohol and heart disease.

Apart from self-help therapy such as regular exercise, there are psychological treatments, including relaxation training and therapy aimed at getting rid of pre-sleep worries and anxieties. Medication is regarded by many as a last option and often takes the form of sleeping pills.

【1】What’s the best title of this passage?

    A. Lack of Sleep    B. Change of Sleep

    C. Patterns of Sleep  D. Benefits of Sleep

【2】Which of the following can cause people’s lack of sleep according to this passage?

    A. Their burden from illness and drinking.

    B. Their incomplete sleep stages.

    C. Their body temperature change with age.

    D. Their damaged immune system.

【3】Which of the following is true to the passage?

    A. Nobody can escape lack of sleep.

    B. A sleep-walker usually dreams before the sleepwalking.

    C. In the REM stage sleepers can see things around but can’t move the body.

    D. Regular exercise can better help improve sleep quality than sleeping pills do.

  • 24、It was such an extremely freezing day that I decided to get a cup of hot drinking first after   work.As my colleague,Ricky, and I were making our way to a coffee shop,I noticed an old   gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby.Obviously he was frozen, seemingly one of the homeless or someone like that.

We joined the 1ine and waited to be served.Ricky handed the server a twenty-dollar bill,   ordered three cups of hot coffee, and gestured the server to give one to the old gentleman outside on the bench as a favour. The server looked at Ricky,a little perplexed, without full comprehension of the request.Afterwards, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the old man in need of some attention.I only wish I had taken a photo of the smiles on the both faces.

As I was thinking about this event later on,I wondered to myself why Ricky didn’t perform this act of kindness himself.I suspected that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this old man as well.Absolutely beautiful!

There are many ways of thinking when we meet someone as the old man in need of kindness and attention.Perhaps he needs a little helping hand and thank God for my colleague who inspired the others to goodness as well.Oh,by the way,the last words Ricky told the server were,“There go I,but for the Grace of God.”

【1】What was the author’s impression of the old gentleman?

    A.He was a greedy man.

B.He took on a sign of poor manners.

    C.He was in poor health.

D.He needed some kind of human care.

2Why didn't Ricky give the favour to the old gentleman himself?

A.He didn’t know the old gentleman.

B.He was too shy to speak to strangers.

C.He tried to influence others to be kind.

D.He feared the old man would refuse his help.

3What the author really thinks absolutely beautiful is that_________.

A.an act of kindness could go widespread

B.a cup of coffee could warm the old man

C.the server was very kind to customers

    D.Ricky had created good impressions
