  • 21、   A largescale study has found a link between eating a diet based on organic food and having a reduced risk of cancer If the new results are confirmed promoting organic food consumption could be a promising preventative strategy against the disease a team of researchers from several French institutions said

Among the environmental risks for cancer there are growing concerns about exposure to different types of pesticides(杀虫剂) from farming The impact of such chemicals on the human body is still not well understood but there are some indications that harmful effects can occur even at low concentrations

Meanwhile pushed by environmental and health concerns the organic food market continues to grow rapidly Organic food is produced without the use of synthetic(合成的) fertilizers pesticides genetically modified organisms and the use of veterinary(兽医的) medications

"Organic foods are less likely to contain pesticide remains than conventional foods and studies have shown that an organic diet reduces exposure to certain pesticide" Julia Baudry lead author of the study from the Centre of Research in Epidemiology and Statistics in France told Newsweek

"In the general population the primary route of exposure is diet especially intake of conventionally grown fruits and vegetables However few studies have examined the association of organic food consumption with cancer risk "

For the study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine a team of researchers examined data on the organic food consumption frequency and dietary intake of 68946 French adults collected by an ongoing survey which began in 2009 They then followed up on these people at various points in the future

Participants reported how often never occasionally or most of the time they consumed 16 types of organic foods including fruits vegetables soybased products dairy products meat and fish eggs grains and legumes bread and cereals flour vegetable oils and condiments readytoeat meals coffee tea and herbal tea wine biscuits chocolate sugar and so on

1What is the finding of the study

    A. Promoting organic food consumption may help to prevent diseases

    B. Processed food consumption may lead to an increased risk of cancer

    C. Organic food consumption can help cure cancer in a short time

    D. Eating a diet based on organic food may lead to the risk of cancer

2Why is organic food becoming popular nowadays

    A. Because organic food market continues to grow rapidly

    B. Because people care about environment and health issues

    C. Because organic food never contains harmful chemicals

    D. Because organic food is produced in a clean environment

3Which of the following is the advantage of organic food

    A. Organic food never contains harmful pesticide remains

    B. Organic food is less likely to be exposed to some pesticides

    C. Different types of pesticides won't affect organic food

    D. Organic food won't be influenced by outside environment

4What might the article go on describing after the last paragraph

    A. The researching process of the study

    B. The disadvantages of organic food

    C. The current consumption of organic food

    D. The bright future of organic food

  • 22、   There’s a battle storming in the streets of America. Anyone who regularly rides a bicycle knows all about this. Some motorists shout at two-wheeled travelers, who slow traffic. A few will do even worse.

The New York Times reports that incidents of aggression toward bicycle riders appear to be growing. Even though actually every state allows bicyclists the same right as motorists to use the streets, many drivers still refuse to accept this. They view themselves as Kings of the Road --- an impression that has been strongly built by the transportation planning profession, which has designed our cities as if people didn’t exist outside of their cars.

But a big new idea to settle this conflict and improve life in the streets for everyone is now taking root among community activists, urban planners and traffic engineers.

“Too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars. They’re unsafe for people on foot or bike. Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners, engineers and designers to build road networks that welcome all citizens,” declares the website of a new organization promoting this idea, “Complete the Streets” , the best idea to hit our communities since pizza, or even the bicycle itself.

My home of Minneapolis is one of the biking capitals of America. But it hasn’t always been that way. When I moved here many years ago, I was shocked at the strong hostility directed toward me whenever I dared ride my bike down the street. Drivers would suddenly turn in my direction, and then laugh as they nearly knocked me onto the ground.

As the amount of bikes on Minneapolis streets has grown, people have become much more comfortable sharing the road with two-wheelers. Indeed, I get the impression that most motorists now envy rather than hate me, and can’t wait to get home where they can jump on their own bikes. This will happen everywhere as more and more Americans discover biking as a great way to get around, save money, lose weight, protect the planet and have fun.

【1】Who cause the traffic problem according to the motorists?

    A.Bicycle riders.

    B.Urban planners.

    C.Traffic engineers.

    D.Community activists.

【2】The problem of the battle in the streets is most probably rooted in

    D.global warming

【3】What is the movement “Complete the Streets” aimed at?

    A.Improving health conditions.

    B.Promoting walking and bicycling.

    C.Building more road networks.

D.Assessing the impact of the conflict.

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

    A.To present a problem.

    B.To praise the bicyclists.

    C.To describe a change.

    D.To blame the car riders.

  • 23、Walk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.

Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to solve global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 given off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to the future climate change? If it gets drier, will it survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.

Unfortunately, collecting information is incredibly difficult. To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen(花粉)kept in lake mud, Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediments(沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes.  Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon forest reacts to climate change.

1How do scientists study the past climate change?

    A. By predicting the climate change in the future.

    B. By drilling down deep into land sediments.

    C. By analyzing fossilized pollen in lake mud.

    D. By taking samples from rivers in the Amazon.

2Why is it difficult to collect information about the past climate change?

    A. Because scientists can't find proper equipment and machinery.

    B. Because it is very difficult to obtain complete samples.

    C. Because helicopters and aeroplanes have no place to land.

    D. Because none of the cores provide any information.

3Where is the passage most probably taken from?

    A. A medical journal.   B. A news report

    C. A travel brochure.   D. A science magazine.

4The best title for the text may be   .

    A. Secrets of the Rainforest

    B. Climates of the Amazon

    C. The History of the Rainforest

    D. Changes of the Rainforest
