二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I'm seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter and you put things in their bags for them and carried things to their cars. It was hard work.

While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, "Mr Castle, how are you?" We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, "It was nice talking to you, Brett." I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn't remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put "Irving" down on my name plate. If he'd have said, "Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?" I'd have been ready for him. There's nothing personal here.

The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn't accept tips. Okay, I'm outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction is to take a quarter and give it to me. I'd say, "I'm sorry, I can't." They'd get angry. When you give someone a tip, you're sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, "Oh, thanks a lot." When you say, "I'm sorry, I can't." They feel a little put down. They say, "No one will know." And they put it in your pocket. You say, "I really can't." It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store's belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendlything and made the customer feel good. I just couldn't understand the strangeness of some people's ideas.

One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.

I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.

【1】What can be the best title for this text?

    A. How Hard Life Is for Box Boys B. Getting along with Customers

    C. Why I Gave up My Job   D. The Art of Taking Tips

【2】From the second paragraph, we can infer that ________.

    A. the writer didn't like the impersonal part of his job

    B. with a name plate, people can easily start talking

    C. Mr Castle mistook Irving for Brett

    D. Irving was the writer's real name

【3】The box boy refused to accept tips because ________.

    A. customers only gave small tips

    B. some customers had strange ideas about tipping

    C. the store didn't allow the box boys to take tips

    D. he didn't want to fight with the customers

【4】The underlined phrase "put down" in the third paragraph probably means_______.

    A. misunderstood B. defeated

    C. hateful   D. hurt

  • 22、You can get a clear picture about Deep Work by Cal Newport in 5 minutes. Deep Work tells us professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive(认知的)capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value and improve your skill. The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who develop the skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive (蓬勃发展).

The book tells us the core abilities for thriving in the new economy, which are the ability to quickly master hard things, the ability to produce a high level, in terms of both quality and speed. If you can’t learn, you can’t thrive. If you don’t produce, you won’t thrive—no matter how skilled or talented you are. If you haven’t mastered deep work, you’ll struggle to learn hard things. To learn hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distraction.

The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and habits to your working life designed to minimize a state of unbroken concentration. To master the art of deep work, therefore, you must take back control of your time and attention from the many entertainments on the Internet that attempt to steal them. Adopt a tool only if its positive impacts on these factors substantially outweigh its negative impacts. It’s crucial that you figure out in advance what you’ re going to do with your evenings and weekends before they begin.

In the end of Deep Work, we can know that the ability to concentrate is a skill that gets valuable things done. If you’ re struggling to use your mind to its fullest capacity to create things that matter, then you’ll discover, as others have before you, that depth generates a life rich with productivity and meaning.

  • 23、Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of miles that make up the complete Appalachian Trail(AT). Harvey, or “Little Man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.

Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassic Sution, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.

It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tent and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to camp again.

During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers. Harvey says he enjoyed playing the “cell phone game” where you pretend you are different people.

Harvey and his family made friends with other hikers on the trail. Along the way, Harvey earned the nickname of “Little Man”.

Karl Donus Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. He helped make the hike fun for Harvey by creating a treasure hunt for him to complete.

But Harvey also enjoyed the sometimes hard work of hiking. “My favorite part was the rock scrambles,” he says, “because they were so fun and hard.”

Mr. Sakas says Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game of freeze tag.

Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey’s mom says that because of the experience, “We’re closer than ever before.”

【1】According to the story, we know that .

A.Harvey Sutton started hiking at the age of 4.

    D.Novel

【3】What can we learn from the story?

  • 24、Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake? Well here’s some good news: it’s likely that no one even notice.

The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do. We experience the spotlight effect not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well, such as making a mistake in a game, giving a terrible answer in class, scoring a big goal or doing a good deed. In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching.

The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance. We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However, in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.

Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It’s normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.

However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle. If someone is so nervous that they can’t make good decisions then it’s time to take action and improve the situation.

Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. The next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it’s just your mind playing tricks on you. Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself. If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self-conscious.

    【1】What is the spotlight effect?

A.It feels like all eyes are on us.

B.We enjoy more focus from others.

C.It’s probably (hat no one notices us.

D.It is a trick lo make us perform well.

【2】How do we usually feel when the spotlight effect occurs?

    A.Proud.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Relaxed.

    D.Depressed.

【3】Which of the following is true about the spotlight effect?

A.It makes people feel more confident in scoring a big goal.

B.It may be an unusual human experience about social anxiety.

C.It happens only when we make some mistakes in great events.

D.It exists when we care too much about what others think of us.

【4】Why should we learn about the spotlight effect?

    A.To release our mental burden.

B.To help us take more exercise.

    C.To make us more self-conscious.

D.To help us pay more attention in class.
