24、It was Saturday again. Lily and Lucy disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same way. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Lily had to attend the art lesson and Lucy had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today.” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Lily and Lucy at the same time. “Do you have the same idea as me?” they asked each other and laughed. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Lily put on Lucy’s ballet dress while Lucy put Lily’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Lucy couldn’t understand the art teacher. Unlike Lily, Lucy was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Lucy didn’t dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Lily was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her class blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her. “Lucy, you should remember the basic steps, you can’t depend on copying what others are doing”

25、I’ll never forget one summer day in 1975. On that day my mother suddenly died because of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer came to my house to ask for my father’s permission(允许)for the hospital to use Mother’s valve(心脏瓣膜). I was greatly surprised. I ran into the house in tears. At 14, I just couldn’t understand why people would take apart(分解)a person I loved. . But my father told him, “Yes.”
“How can you let them do that to her?” I cried at him.
“Linda,” he said quietly, putting his arms around me, “the greatest present you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a person’s life better after we died, our death will have meaning.’’
The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.
Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1996 my father became seriously ill. With a smile he told me that when he died, he wanted to donate(捐赠)whatever was in good condition(状况), especially his eyes.
My father died and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, my daughter said, “Mum, I’m so proud of what you did for Grandpa.” At that moment I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes. What he left behind sparkled(闪烁)in my daughter’s eyes-pride.

26、 It’s 2012. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you’ve been thinking about lately. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.
Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people behave in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system(神经系统). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel can have an influence on the health of your body.
Stress(压力,紧张) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody’s life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.
When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline(肾上腺素). Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can’t fight or run away from, so you don’t use up all that adrenaline. It just stays bottled up inside you, and that’s what can do something bad to you.
What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can set up a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.
The link(关联) between your body and brain works in two ways. Your body can help your mind deal with stress. If you are under stress, you need to take especially good care of your body. It’s important to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals. Some people take a vitamin-mineral pill every day. Another thing that you can do is daily exercise. If you go walking or do aerobic dancing or work out at the gym, you give your body a chance to burn up some of that adrenaline. Of course, a person who isn’t used to much physical activity should start slowly. Anyone with a continuing physical problem should check with a doctor before starting any exercise programs.

B.One can do his homework to burn up adrenaline.

【3】From the last sentence of Paragraph 5 we can infer that ________.
A.it’s difficult to change a stressful situation
B.it’s not stressful when a good change takes place
C.a big change will cause another stressful situation
D.a stressful situation can’t be changed without any effort
【4】What is probably the best title for this passage?
A.The Body-Brain Link. B.The Causes of Stress.
C.The Advice on Health. D.The Nervous System.
27、 In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party or just for coffee and conversation.
Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their homes: “Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?” “Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”
To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you’re sorry and give an excuse. “Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry. I’ve tickets for a movie.”
Sometimes, however, people say something like invitations but which are not real invitations. For example “Please come over for a drink sometime.” “Why not get together for a party sometime?” “Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?”
They are really just polite ways of ending their talk. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention a certain time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to expressions like these, people just say “Sure, that would be great!” or “OK. Yes, thanks.”
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?
