26、 Modern buildings are set up on a large scale in the city. Should they be allowed to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. All historical buildings are not attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to be the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old ones too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
【1】What is the author's view of historical buildings in Paragraph 1?
A.Some of them are unattractive.
B.Many of them are too old to preserve.
C.They don't offer the historic feel of an area.
D.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
【2】Which of the following does the author mostly agree with?
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings shouldn't fit in with their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have reduced the interest of the area they are in.
D.No one knows why people are against new buildings.
【3】The underlined words “move things forward” mean _______.
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.respect people's feelings
D.choose new architectural style
【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To answer the questions people show great interest in.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
27、I am used to alarming headlines about test results in many countries, but there was a more interesting example recently. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA, 国际学生评估项目) tested the financial literacy of 15-year-olds internationally, and the results are not encouraging. Nearly a quarter of test-takers did not even reach a baseline of proficiency. Financial literacy implies an understanding of what money is, how to manage it, and how it can be lost or gained.
Shanghai’s youth outperformed their peers once again. Congratulations! But in my experience, perhaps not all of you have acquired a high level of financial literacy, and this city does not always make it easy to exercise financial self-discipline. Have you ever been tempted to spend more by all the street stands selling fish balls in curry (咖喱) sauce, a tentacle (章鱼须) on a stick or cold bubble tea? I certainly have. Many Shanghainese also overstretch (使……硬撑着) themselves to buy a car, even though Shanghai has excellent and affordable public transportation.
Financial literacy, however, doesn’t just mean being economical and buying inexpensive things. It also means, for example, the difference between owning assets (资产) and liabilities (债务). Assets make you money. Liabilities merely cost you money. You can be more secure financially if you invest in assets because assets are an additional source of income from wages. Sometimes, it’s better to spend money than save it — if you invest in something worthwhile. Buying shoes which will last a lifetime can actually save you money in the long term. Cheap, flimsy shoes, on the other hand, will only cost you more — according to a principle called “false economy.”
Such principles are not usually taught at school. Perhaps your parents can teach you more. Financial journalists and writers, such as Martin Lewis of www.moneysavingexpert.com, taught me more. But we know practice makes perfect. Do your parents give you an allowance? Would you look for part-time work like babysitting this summer? In that case, write down what your income is each week. Decide how much of it you want to save each week and how much you can spend.
Finally, remember that wealth is not the only important goal in life. Your moral character is your greatest asset. I must remember this principle before I go to my tailor again.
【1】Which of the following statements about the PISA financial literacy test is NOT true?
A.The test that the PISA conducted produced an alarming headline.
B.Most of the participants proved to be good at financial literacy.
C.Shanghai’s students came out on top in the test.
D.All the students who participated in the test were 15 years old.
【2】According to the article, why does the author say Shanghai is not always conducive to financial self-discipline?
A.Because it is more expensive to buy a car in Shanghai than in other cities.
B.Because there are many tempting stands selling all kinds of foods in Shanghai.
C.Because it is expensive to travel around Shanghai using public transportation.
D.Because those who live in Shanghai are surrounded by people who like to overstretch themselves.
【3】According to the article, what does false economy mean?
A.An action that saves money both at the beginning and in the long run.
B.An action that costs a lot both at the beginning and in the long run.
C.An action that costs a lot at the very beginning but results in more money being saved in the long run.
D.An action that saves money at the beginning but results in more money being spent in the long run
【4】According to the article, how can we improve our financial literacy?
① Take a financial literacy course at school.
② Read Martin Lewis’ articles on www. money savingexpert.com.
③ Ask our parents to give us an allowance.
④ Look for a part-time job and learn to manage our income.
A.①②
B.③④
C.①③
D.②④
28、 Do you want to make a difference in your community? The Verizon App Challenge can get you started. The first step is to think of a problem in your community. The next step is to create an app that can solve the problem.
Groups of five to seven students in middle school or high school, led by a teacher, can enter the contest. First, teams will compete on a local level. Teams that make it to the next round receive $5,000 for their schools. Finalists present their app ideas to judges in a live web conference. Next, the judges pick national winners. The top eight teams receive an additional $15,000 for their schools, and each team member receives a Samsung tablet. Plus, the winning teams get the chance to bring their app to life.

29、 Elizabeth Bishop is considered one of the best American poets of the 20th century. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1911. Her dad died when she was just a baby and her mom never recovered from the loss; she went to live with her grandparents in Nova Scotia, Canada when she was five. Eventually Bishop attended Vassar College, where she began to write poetry.
At Vassar she discovered Marianne Moore's poetry and met “Ms. Moore” and began their life-long friendship. She later met poet Robert Lowell. She wrote tons and tons of letters to both of them, which is good for us because we would otherwise know very little of her personal life. Bishop's poetry is sometimes considered objective and cold because it shows almost nothing about the poet or her life.
Bishop published her first book of poetry in 1946 and wrote until her death in 1979. She would spend years working on a single poem. Her poems are not the result of hasty scribbling (匆忙乱写) on paper while eating breakfast. Over a lifetime of writing, she only published about 275 pages of poetry, and about 40 of those are translations. She would look through drafts of poems again and again and improve them until they were as close to perfect as she could get them.
Reading Elizabeth Bishop is like being transported to the very place, the very moment she’s writing about. She leads us to a microscope so we can see every smallest part of the scene. It seems she's always asking us to notice more, and more until the poem is so clear in our minds that it’s almost painful — like a light that's too bright. It might take your eyes a while to get used to it, but once they do, you'll like what you see.
【1】What do we know about Bishop's early life?
A.She started to write poems at five.
B.She was always encouraged by her parents.
C.She spent her childhood mainly in Worcester.
D.She was mainly brought up by her grandparents.
【2】What can we say about Bishop's poetic creation?
A.She liked to write in the morning.
B.She could write poems at high speed.
C.She tried her best to achieve perfection.
D.She published hundreds of books of poetry.
【3】Which can be used to describe the style of Bishop's poems?
A.Exact. B.Informal.
C.Humorous. D.Enthusiastic.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 【1】 into the hand?
Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 【2】. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 【3】. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 【8】 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 【1】 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.
Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 【2】.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 【3】 supporting.
The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 【4】 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 【5】.
