  • 27、A painting by Chinese artist Qi Baishi set a record for modern art and calligraphy (书法) on the mainland when it sold for 425.5 million yuan at an auction (拍卖) on May 22. The sale was a milestone (里程碑) in the auction of modern and contemporary artworks.

The price meant its value had risen more than 2,000 per cent in six years. The work , Eagle standing on pine tree with four-character coupleti(对联), measures about 2.6 metres by 1 metre . It was the second highest price paid for an artwork on the mainland . A Song dynasty work by Huang Tingjian was sold for 436.8 million yuan in 2010. Qi’s painting was finished in 1946 when Qi was 86, and was his largest work . With a starting price of 88 million yuan, it attracted nearly 50 bids(出价)in half an hour. Shanghai businessman Liu Yiqian said that the work had belonged to him and had cost less than 20 million yuan in 2005. The auction company said the work was brought back to the mainland after being bought from a private owner in San Francisco six years ago.

  • 28、I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather(继父)and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

【3】What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

    A.She worked as a translator.

B.She attended a lot of job interviews.

C.She paid telephone bills for her family.

D.She helped her family with her English.

    【4】The author believes that ________.

A.her future will be free from troubles

B.it is difficult to learn to become patient

C.there are more good things than bad things

  • 29、How did people in ancient China change their luck? Most of them would take the exam, Keju, which began during the Sui Dynasty and lasted for 1,300 years before it was ended in the Qing Dynasty.

Keju, the early “gaokao”, played a very important role in choosing qualified persons to work for the king.

Most candidates in ancient China had to go a long way to the capital city for the exam. As transportation in ancient times was not developed, they usually went to the capital on foot, and some took several months to reach the capital.

The exam was held once every three years and it was made up of four levels: the county examination, provincial examination, academy examination and palace examination. Candidates had to first pass one level in order to take part in the next level. Each examination would take from one to three days to finish, and they were locked in a small room and received cold meals.

On the exam day, candidates had to first go through safety check. They had to let their hair loose so that it could be checked and their trouser legs, shoes and socks, even bottoms were also checked.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、根据下面短文内容,在短文的空格处填上一个恰当的词,使短文完整、通顺。

Coffee bars, live music, cinemas and shopping malls—Chinese cities offer everything that a young person might want. But there are many young people who hardly have time to enjoy these things. That’s because they follow what is called the “996” work schedule (时间表) 1 at 9 am and finishing at 9 pm, six days a week.

The “996” work schedule has recently become a hot topic of discussion online after a computer programmer set up a website called “996.ICU”. According to the website, working a “996” schedule 2 enough rest is unhealthy and could cause people to end up in an intensive care unit (ICU,重症监护病房). This work schedule is now widely used at Chinese tech companies like Baidu, Alibaba and Huawei, New York Times reported. It causes many tech industry workers to complain. One worker from Baidu company said, “I know I am not the 3 worker who works overtime I have worked ‘996’ for nine months and I haven’t received any overtime pay. It’s unfair though quite common.” Another worker named Zhang told Quartz, “I can’t sleep well and become ill because of the great pressure. I feel really tired, so I am considering giving up this job and looking for 4.”

However, the bosses of some tech companies have supported “996”. Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, said it’s “a huge treasure” for young workers to work “996”. “If you don’t put more time and energy than others, how will you achieve the success you want? If you don’t work ‘996’ when you’re young, 5 will you?” he said.

Many have questioned Ma’s words. In a passage in People’s Daily, one writer said “Working ‘996’ is just working overtime. However, working overtime does not 6 working hard. Working hard requires efforts and working wisely and effectively.”

A lawyer called Cui Zhendong told China Daily that it is against the 7 to use a compulsory (强制的) “996” work schedule. China’s Labor Law clearly announces that workers should work no more than eight hours a day 8 more than forty-four hours a week.
