二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I believe that my actions show my beliefs, not my words.

I wrote a letter to my kids a few years ago. It’s three pages long, and it sums up my life experience of four decades. By the time they reach adulthood, they will have heard most of their father’s advice in that letter: live in the moment, do not attach yourself to physical things, treat others the way you would like to be treated, etc. I sealed the letter in a white envelope, and wrote instructions that nobody should open it unless something horrible happened to me.

As a police officer, I have seen life disappear in an instant. I realize that could happen to me at any time. Yet knowing that letter is there in my locker makes me more comfortable with my own death.

Every day, when I open my locker, I see the letter. It makes me aware that I should be careful at work, and show my children and the people I have connection with that I try to practice everything I have written. If that day comes and my children finally read the letter, I hope that because of my actions, they will take my written beliefs to heart and improve upon my example.

But for me, it’s not enough to write down my beliefs. I try to be the best person I can be every day---even in very difficult circumstances. I am more successful some days than others, but sometimes I curse too much. Sometimes I am cynical, unwilling to believe that people have good and honest reasons for doing something. I also get stressed and upset, yelling at my kids sometimes, and sometimes I am not as loving or as sympathetic as I should be. In fact, I am far from perfect, but I hope my children will eventually realize that perfection is an illusion. What really matters is that, instead of just writing down our beliefs, we all take action to be the best humans we can be.

C.He kept adding something new to it.

D.His kids asked him to check it.

3What can we learn about the letter written by the author?

B.The kids were too young to understand the tips in it.

C.The author was sure of its positive effects on his kids.

D.The author hoped it wouldn’t be opened until bad things occurred.

  • 22、   As a saying goes, "Don`t use a lot where a little will do." I recently saw a reality show about helping change struggling restaurants. The premise(前提)is that an expert comes in to help save a family business, and in the process helps the owners rebuild their relationships and their lives. In the beginning, the expert suggested the family reduce their menu from multiple pages to just one. They originally created a massive list of selections because they assumed this created more value. But in many instances, less is more.

This is a big part of the philosophy behind the website—Tiny Buddha. I publish one post from the community every day, which allows me to spend a great deal of time with writers. Traditional wisdom of the web suggests that more content leads to more page views, which eventually creates a successful site. Yet I’ve found the opposite is true.

Having a lower quantity allows more time to focus on quality, and also allows more time for connection through comments. In this way, it’s not about building a large community; it’s about developing and improving an engaged one. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no greater success than that. Regardless of your project or dream, the "less is more" philosophy can go a long way in creating value and enabling progress.

You may not have a large number of hours to commit, but this means you are encouraged to prioritize your goals, and that just may help you focus and become the most effective. You may not have abundant resources, but this means your passion and purpose may be your greatest possession, and there`s no limit to what you can accomplish when you invest yourself in a vision(构想)that moves and inspires you. You may not have countless readers or customers, but this means you can focus on providing excellent service, which can be far more valuable than dozens of cursory(粗略的)connections and standard experiences.

Most importantly, when we focus on doing less and doing it well, instead of doing more and assuming it better,we are less scattered(分散的), more deliberate, less harried, and more attentive. And really, isn’t that what we want? It`s not just the goals and the outcomes we imagine; it’s the happiness and satisfaction we imagine we’ll experience when we get there. It may be the biggest advantage to do less: we create more space to enjoy those things now.

  • 23、When you were at school, were you ever told to stop daydreaming and concentrate? It was easy for your mind to wander if you weren’t interested in what you were learning or if you had better things to think about. Staying focused can still be a challenge in adult life, but understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.

Scientists have looked at what makes us delay and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. One of the most obvious things is eliminating noise. Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is best for concentration, or a gentle background hum and coffee shop noise is great! It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.

Another possible cure for a short attention span is brain training. Psychologists and neuroscientists are increasingly interested in our ability to settle down and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. An article for BBC Future by Caroline Williams says that “Attention Researcher Nilli Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions.” So, keeping your mind busy might be the answer.

There are more practical tips to keeping your mind focused. These include making a list or timetable of the tasks you have to do, finding a workspace where you’re not tempted to do other things, or chewing some gum! It’s possible the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.

But according to Science Focus magazine, distraction isn’t all bad. “If we were always so focused that we never got distracted, we’d miss potential changes, such as threats, in our environment. Distraction is vital for survival.”

【1】Which of the following is similar to the underlined phrase in paragraph 2?

    A.Concerned.

    B.Enthusiastic.

    C.Calm.

    D.Absorbed.

【2】Why does the author suggest keeping our mind busy?

    A.To introduce a mental recovery.

    B.To explain a cultural phenomenon.

C.To train our brain to concentrate.

    D.To recommend an intelligent train.

【3】What is Science Focus magazine’s attitude to distraction?

    A.Contradictory.

    B.All-sided.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Puzzling.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.How to stay focused

    B.The harm of distraction

    C.The Benefits of keeping focused

    D.The research about distraction

  • 24、   Sora observed in amazement as Weilun picked up two large metal cans. She followed Weilun with a pail (桶) of clothes, watching him carry the two cans effortlessly. They were large and were covering Weilun’s small frame.

Sora’s father had sent her to the village to learn about rural life. Sora had never once done any household chores back home. She did not understand why her father would always chant “Where is your willingness to learn?” whenever she asked him if she could stay home for the holidays. Her father had given her a checklist on the life skills that she needed to learn, one of which was to wash clothes. She recalled washing a table cloth after an art lesson in school. That was a piece of cake, she thought. So Sora refused Weilun’s offer to help. Weilun then went to fill the large cans with water at the far end of the river.

Suddenly, a big bird dived from the sky when Sora placed the last piece of clothing back in the pail. Sora released her grasp of the pail in shock. Then she was relaxed to find it was aiming for a worm near her. But the clothes were drifting in the river. Weilun immediately came to help and Sora shifted the blame to the bird.

He pointed at the detergent foam (洗涤剂泡沫) on the surface of the river. “Don’t tell me you rinsed (漂洗) the detergent from the clothes in the river. Don’t you know that it may kill the river creatures? You caused the problem, not the bird!” Sora looked down in shame. “You think that you know everything, but you actually don’t.”

Sora closed her eyes to let Weilun’s words sink in for a moment. She finally understood the meaning behind her father’s chants. She walked towards Weilun and whispered, “Could you teach me all the life skills that my father had planned for me to learn?”

    【1】Why was Sora amazed?

A.Weilun was too small in size for the two large cans.

B.Weilun was willing to help his parents do some chores.

C.Weilun managed to carry the two large cans easily.

D.Weilun was willing to accompany her to the riverside.

【2】Why did Sora refuse Weilun’s offer to help wash the clothes?

A.She thought it was an easy task.

B.She had learned how to do it.

C.She wanted her father to be proud of her.

D.She wanted to learn new things by herself.

【3】What happened when Sora found the bird flew towards her?

A.The bird was diving for food.

    B.The bird was attacking her.

C.Sora was rinsing the detergent in the pail.

D.Sora was shocked to find a worm in the pail.

【4】What do you think Sora “finally understood”?

A.She wasn’t capable of living on her own.

B.She really lacked the willingness to learn.

C.Life skills could be learned in the country.

D.Her father wanted her to learn from Weilun.
