26、 Statistics show that most toddlers (刚学走路的小孩) learn how to say about 20 words by 18 months. Talking is easy. If you ask anyone, none will remember how they started doing it, it just comes naturally.
But what might not flow as smoothly as words, is body language. It's a whole different deal when you're using your hands, eyes or head instead of your tongue. And what makes it even more complicated is the fact that body language differs all around the world.
I find it shockingly amazing how just a small finger gesture could mean one thing in the east and the completely opposite in the west. For instance, in Japan bowing is the most common greeting. It shows respect and Japanese pay a lot of attention to the details like the timing, posture and movement. A bow in Japan represents sincerity, respect and graciousness. While in New Zealand Maori, the pressing of noses and foreheads is the traditional greeting. They call it "hongi”; which is regarded as the breath of life.
For most of us, nodding our head up and down often means agreement, but not for the Bulgarians or Greeks. In both cultures, nodding one's head up and down actually means“no”. The American goodbye wave could actually be interpreted (领会) as a“no”in many parts of Europe and Latin America. And the Italian goodbye wave would be understood in America as a “come here” and the American “come here” gesture would actually be seen as an insult (侮辱) in most of Asia.
So before you travel to explore a different culture, make sure you're aware of alternate meanings for body language. We live in a world with many different cultures, so don't forget how differently one hand gesture can be interpreted!
【1】What makes body language misunderstood often?
A.Its wide uses. B.Its smooth flowing.
C.Its difficulties in understanding. D.The background of different cultures.
【2】What does the pressing of noses and foreheads mean in New Zealand?
A.Breath. B.Respect. C.Tradition. D.Greeting.
【3】In which country does nodding mean “no”?
A.America. B.Greece. C.New Zealand. D.Japan.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Origin of Body Language B.The Limitation of Culture

27、 There are numerous “secrets” out there on attaining success. The vast majority of these so called secrets all have one thing in common – Attitude.
【1】
The key to developing a successful attitude is to decide that there are certain things in life that you need, rather than merely want. For example, do you want a luxury house? 【2】 Do you want fame and fortune in your career?
Sure, everyone wants these things. 【3】 That is because it’s never enough to merely want something. You have to be the type of individual who feels that they need these things in order to survive. This gives you the motivation to work towards your dream and do whatever it takes – except, of course, for breaking laws or hurting people – to get there. And all this must be done with the “fuel” of a positive attitude.
How do you begin to change your attitude?
It is always useful to connect with useful resources outside us in changing our attitude for the better. 【4】 Try to pay closer attention to your inner thoughts.
Realizing where negative thoughts come from can help us get to the point where we are able to erase them. Once they are erased, it is vital to replace them with more positive thoughts. 【5】
Perhaps your friends and loved ones will not understand the new you. But you can become a role model for them — and it begins by developing a positive attitude!
A.What do you need?
B.Do you want a lot of money?
C.What is the secret to Success?
D.Do you find yourself constantly in doubt?
E.However, the change will always begin inside you.
F.Problem is, very few people are able to attain them.
G.This is how we begin to make an attitude adjustment.
28、Rajendra Singh is considered a hero in the state of Rajasthan, India, for single-handedly saving five rivers that had been dried up for decades.
Singh, who studied Ayurvedic medicine at college, had always dreamed of becoming a farmer. So when he moved to Rajasthan's Alwar district in 1985, he was interested in curing not just his people, but also the region's ecosystem.
Singh noticed that most villagers had left their homes after the local Arvari River had dried up, and the only people who remained were either too old or too poor to move elsewhere. Singh, driven by a strong desire to help the villagers, took on the task of bringing water back to those lands.
For two years, Singh worked tirelessly, building johads (rainwater storage tanks built with stone, dirt, or whatever materials are available) and checking dams that didn't result in much success. Local elders laughed at him, but he continued working with enthusiasm. And his enthusiasm proved infectious-seeing he was sincere in wanting to help bring water back to their lands, the locals soon began to give money and offer suggestions on appropriate locations to build more dams and johads.
Finally his strategy worked. It wasn't long before the Arvari River came back to life, along with four other rivers. People who had abandoned the districts slowly began to move back home, returning to their traditional way of life.
Inspired by his success, Singh runs a non-profit organization called Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS), through which he helps thousands of people solve problems of water shortage. Since the 1980s, TBS has built over 4,500 johads that collect rainwater in 850 villages in 11 districts in India.

A.He paid attention to its ecosystem.
B.He worked hard to be a good farmer.

【2】Why did most villagers leave their homes?
A.The living conditions were bad.
B.They wanted to realize their dreams.
C.They were driven out by floods.
D.They needed to earn money to survive.
【3】Which words can be used to describe Singh?
A.Brave and generous.
B.Caring and determined.
C.Stubborn and tough.
D.Creative and broad-minded.
【4】What can we know about Tarun Bharat Sangh?
A.It is funded by the rich local citizens.
B.It is founded to support Singh's medical research.
C.It enables many villagers to gain easier access to water.
D.It calls on all Indians to protect their living environment.
29、 A trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer. And the more often you get that culture, the better the results are, a new study suggests.
Researchers from University College London (UCL) did the research on more than 6,000 adults in England age 50 years and older. How often an individual engaged in art activities was measured at the start of the study in 2004 to 2005. Participants were then followed up for an average of 12 years, during which time deaths were recorded using data from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). They found that people who engaged in the arts more frequency had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn’t. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.
The study looked at a range of economic, health and social factors to try and explain why there is a link between “arts engagement and living longer. Part of the reason, the study said, comes down to social and economic differences among those who go and don’t go to museums, exhibitions and art galleries. Wealth, they found, explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive (认知的) differences and mental health also played a role. Things like free time and occupational status made no difference, said Fancourt.
Engaging with the arts can act as a buffer against stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. It also helps people access emotional support and information that helps people age more successfully. “We also thought that a greater sense of purpose could play a role,” she said. “It can have wide ranging benefits and support healthier lives lived longer.”
A world health organization last year found that both receptive participation, like visiting a museum, and active participation, like singing in a choir, had health benefits. An editorial that accompanied the paper said that everyone should have the chance to take part in cultural activities and said the study added weight to growing concerns about the decline in arts subjects in schools and universities.
【1】What was the right step of the experiment?
A.Following the participants for 12 years.
B.Recording the participants’ death time.
C.Comparing the frequency of art activities.
D.Dividing the participants into two groups.
【2】What has nothing to do with the relationship between “arts engagement and living longer”?
A.Wealth. B.Cognition.
C.Occupation. D.Mental health.
【3】What does the underlined word “buffer” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Relief. B.Barrier.
C.Defence. D.Battle.
