二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Despite living in it, we hardly know exactly how big the Milky Way is. But new research has provided us with an answer. Using a large survey of stars instead of just models (as previous researchers did), astronomers have now determined the disk of our galaxy to be 200,000 light years across twice as large as was believed a decade ago.

Astronomers know the Milky Way to be a spiral (螺旋状的) galaxy with a flat central disk composed of spiraling arms and a thin outer cloud of stars called the halo ( ). Most of the stars are found in the disk, which rapidly thins out at the edges. The size of the galaxy is measured from the point at which the number of stars in the disk significantly drops, so finding disk stars is key to determining the Milky Way’s size.

Coincidentally, disk stars tend to be much younger than the halo stars. Since stars gradually build up elements over generations, the disk stars’ composition can be different from that of the halo stars, allowing astronomers to figure out which stars belong to which population.

With a process known as spectroscopy ( ), researchers studied the chemical composition of over 4,600 stars from two surveys, and mapped out which stars are part of the disk and which belong to the halo. The results clearly show disk stars much farther from the center of the galaxy than before.

The researchers still believe the density of stars in the disk gets lower in an exponential ( 指数的) manner— just farther away from each other than previously thought. Although the galaxy has been supersized, it is still smaller than its neighbor Andromeda, which measures over 220,000 light years across. While our galaxy is looking larger, it ’ s not putting on much weight. Because the outer reaches are much less dense than the center of the galaxy, the additional area is only thinly populated with stars. These few extra stars are only a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the galaxy, so overall the mass of the Milky Way remains largely unchanged.

1What has new research found about the Milky Way?

A.It's hard to know its size.

B.It can be measured by using models.

C.It has grown much larger than before.

D.It’s much larger than previously thought.

2Where is the size of the Milky Way measured?

A.At the end of the halo.

B.At the edge of the disk.

C.At the start of the disk stars.

D.At the point of the spiraling arms.

3How can researchers distinguish disk from halo stars?

    A.By studying their chemical composition.

B.By measuring their distance to the sun.

    C.By measuring their weight.

    D.By comparing their size.

4The underlined part in the last paragraph probably refers to ______.

A.the speed of the stars’ moving

B.the weight of the stars in total

C.the number of stars in an area

D.the size of the Milky Way

5What can we infer about the stars in the Milky Way?

    A.They are unevenly distributed.

B.They are heavier than previously predicted.

C.They make the Milky Way larger than others.

D.They mainly stay in the outer ranges of the disk.

  • 22、   Think you have already reached your peak in life? You might want to think again. According to a new research, we're happiest at two periods in our lives — not just one. Researchers at the London School of Economics and Political Science asked 23,000 German volunteers aged 17 to 85 to rate their life satisfaction. Participants predicted how happy they would feel in five years, and then, after five years' time, reported back on how they actually felt.

Their results? Anything but unpleasant! The study found that happiness tends to follow a U-shaped curve over an individual's lifetime, with satisfaction reaching higher levels during the extremes of the study’s age range and swinging down in middle age. Plus, the researchers noted the two most important years when happiness peaks: ages 23 and 69.

As is shown in our daily life, it makes a lot of sense. In our early 20s, we're energetic and excited about the changes that come along with young age: new jobs, new places to travel, and new people to meet. By the time we reach our 60s and 70s, though, we have likely retired and can now find the time — not to mention the money — to book a flight to Hawaii at a moment's notice. After all, your 40+ years are a busy time filled with raising families, climbing the corporate ladder, and you know, it's the life in general.

Of course, that's all the more reason to find easy ways to be happier without really trying, regardless of your age! Experts recommend prioritizing (优先考虑) small yet rewarding tasks like taking a walk or spending time with family. Just remember, now you have one more reason to look forward to getting older: an increase in happiness!

1What does the author think of the research results?

A.They are predictable. B.They are annoying.

C.They are satisfactory. D.They are surprising.

2What does the underlined word "it" refer to in Paragraph 3?

A.The outcome of the research. B.The second peak in life.

C.The study's age range. D.The first peak in life.

3When does people’s satisfaction reach the lowest in a lifetime?

    A.In one’s teens. B.In one's forties.

    C.In one's twenties. D.In one's sixties.

4Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A.The shape of happiness. B.The older, the happier.

C.How to be happy. D.The happiest ages in life.

  • 23、Dogs see the world through their noses. Their special ability to recognize specific scents helps them find bombs, guns, drugs and human remains. Man’s best friend may also be his best health ally. There are reports about dogs trained to sniff out cancer, diabetic conditions and other health problems. According to a new study, dogs can do something just as remarkable: sniff out stress in people.

While previous studies have suggested dogs might pick up on human emotions possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell. “This study has definitely proven that when people have a stress response, their odor profile changes.” said Clara Wilson, a PhD student and first author of the research. Wilson added the findings could prove useful when training service dogs that support people with emotional damage.

Wilson and her colleagues were able to train four dogs to indicate the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the line-up included unused gauze, samples from another person, or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day.

Then the team turned to samples collected from 36 people, who were asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17. The participants reported feeling stressed by the task and for the 27 who carried it out in the laboratory, their blood pressure and heart rate rose. The dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task from two containers holding unused gauze.

The researchers then included not only unused gauze but samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials. The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials.

The team say while it was unclear what chemicals the dogs were picking up on, the study shows humans produce a different odor when stressed.

【1】What has the new study found about dogs?

A.They can detect stress in people.

    B.They can influence our emotions.

    C.They can discover potential dangers.

D.They can sniff out diseases like cancer.

【2】Why were the participants asked to count down numbers?

    A.To help them better focus.

    B.To crcate a tense situation.

C.To test their ability to count.

    D.To monitor their blood pressure.

【3】Which of the following can be inferred from the text?

A.Stressed samples are more difficult to identify.

B.Dogs can easily recognize their owners’ smells.

C.Humans produce a different odor under pressure.

D.The team will reveal the chemicals dogs nose out.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Dogs Might Also Suffer from Stress

    B.Dogs Contribute to Relieving Pressure

C.Dogs Aid People with Mental Disorder

D.Dogs Know When You’re Stressed Out

  • 24、One of my first memories as a child in the 1950s was a discussion I had with my brother in our tiny bedroom in the family house in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

We had heard in school about a planet called Pluto. It was the farthest, coldest, and darkest thing a child could imagine. We guessed how long it would take to die if we stood on the surface of such a frozen place wearing only the clothes we had on. We tried to figure out how much colder Pluto was than Antarctica, or than the coldest day we had ever experienced in Pennsylvania.

Pluto, which famously was downgraded from a “major planet” to a “dwarf planet”(矮星) in 2006, captured our imagination because it was a mystery that could complete our picture of what it was like at the most remote corners of our solar system.

Pluto’s underdog discovery story is part of what makes it so attractive. Clyde Tombaugh was a Kansas farm boy who built telescopes out of spare auto parts, old farm equipment and self-ground lenses. As an assistant at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, Tombaugh's task was to search millions of stars for a moving point of light, a planet that the observatory’s founder thought existed beyond the orbit of Neptune. On February 18,1930,Tombaugh found it. Pluto was the first planet discovered by an American, and represented a moment of light in the midst of the Great Depression’s dark encroachment (入侵).

Pluto is much more than something that is not a planet. It’s a reminder that there are many worlds out there beyond our own and that the sky isn’t the limit at all. We don’t know what kinds of fantastic variations on a theme nature is capable of making until we get there to look.

【1】Why did Pluto become famous in 2006 according to the passage?

    A. Because it lost its major planet status.

    B. Because it disappeared in the sky.

    C. Because it was discovered by an American.

    D. Because it was proved to be the coldest planet in the universe.

【2】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. An American Scientist: Clyde Tombaugh

    B. Pluto was First Discovered by a Boy

    C. Pluto’s Strange Romance

    D. The Days I Spent with My Brother in Pennsylvania

【3】What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

    A. Clyde Tombaugh discovered the darkness in the Great Depression.

    B. Pluto was the only planet that was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh.

    C. Clyde Tombaugh’s job was to build telescopes for Lowell Observatory.

    D. Clyde Tombaugh’s telescopes used for searching stars were very simple.

【4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph most probably mean?

    A. Pluto is no less than a planet in the solar system.

    B. Pluto is much more than a planet in the solar system.

    C. Pluto is more important than any other planet in the sky.

    D. Pluto is not a planet in the solar system, but it is more than a planet.
