二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Researchers are worried about the fishing equipment floating around the Pacific Ocean. These ghost nets threaten sea animals and pollute coastal areas.

A ghost net study led by biologist Jennifer Lynch found it difficult in many cases to identify the source of the ghost equipment. Lynch said she is not interested in blaming anyone. Instead, she hopes the study will find new ways to prevent damage to the environment.

Drew, a graduate student and one of the study’s lead researchers, said his biggest concern is that the equipment keeps killing fish and other wildlife long after it’s lost, leaving a path of ecological damage.

The ghost nets pollute oceans around the world, but the Hawaiian Islands are in the middle of two large areas of ocean pollution. It’s difficult to know where theycame from. Experts believe many nets are lost accidentally. But some illegal fishing boats leave nets in the water to avoid being caught. Other fishermen cut away pieces of damaged nets instead of recovering them.

The research team gets some ghost nets from the Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument, the largest protected environment in the United States, also recognized as a United Nations World Heritage Site. Researchers look at about 70 different features of each piece of net, including the kinds of material used, and find nets from all parts of the Pacific.

Brian, a fisherman now working for a net manufacturer in Washington, said nets from poor countries are usually weaker.

Jonathan Moore, one of the researchers, said illegal and unreported fishing is sometimes associated with ghost nets and is among the greatest threats to oceans. Fishing net markings and rules, he added, should be "a central part of responsible fishing management operations".

【1】What is difficult for researchers in many cases of ghost nets?

A.Finding out the source of the nets.

B.Checking the harm done by the nets.

C.What fish and other wildlife are killed.

D.The length of the ecological damage.

【2】What does the underlined word "they" in Para. 4 refer to?

    A.The research experts.

    B.The ghost nets.

    C.The areas of pollution.

    D.The Hawaiian Islands.

【3】What does Jonathan suggest about fishing management?

A.Helping poor countries make strong nets.

B.Trying different materials for fishing nets.

C.Making rules about marking fishing nets.

D.Recovering the ghost nets after they’re lost.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

A.Strict Ocean Fishing Management Is Needed

B.Ghost Nets Should Be Recovered from the Sea

C.A UN World Heritage Site in the US Is in Danger

D.Lost Fishing Equipment Threatens Ocean Life

  • 27、   Most pet owners love and care for their animals and sometimes even treat them like family members. But domestic (家庭的) animals are also sometimes treated badly. This cruelty maybe intentional abuse (虐待), or it can be a result of ignorance. No matter whether it's intentional or not, animal cruelty must be stopped.

Cats, dogs, horses are the most frequent pets of intentional abuse, as they spend much time around humans. Animal abuse is also connected with domestic violence. In one U. S. study, animal abuse had occurred in 88 percent of homes investigated for child abuse. Many abusers threaten to hurt children's beloved pets to control their victims (受害者) or just to enjoy the power it gives them. Victims of domestic violence even stay in abusive relation—ships, fearing that if they leave, their pets will suffer for it.

Animals also suffer physical and psychological harm when their owners are careless in caring for them. This can involve failing to give them food or water, or leaving them outside in uncomfortable conditions. Some people even throw out their animals.

What can be done to stop animal cruelty? The best place to start is at home. Teach children to treat animals with kindness. Set a good example by being respectful toward animals yourself. If we show children that all animals should be treated with respect, that message will continue on to future generations. Contact your local animal shelter and ask how you can support them.

Many countries already have laws to protect animals In the U.S., for example, The Endangered Species Act (ESA) passed in 1973, protecting wild animals that are threatened or endangered. Some laws make it illegal to leave a pet in a car on an extremely hot day. Other laws place limits on the length of time that a pet can be tied up or chained outside.

【1】Domestic animals are badly treated for some reasons Except ________.

    A.their owners are careless

B.they stay with humans for a lot of time

C.abusers control their children by abusing pets

D.they are a threat to children's safety in a family

【2】What can be done to stop animal abuse according to paragraph 4?

A.Call for the government to make anti-abuse laws.

B.Parents act as a model to treat animals well.

C.Contact some pet stores to give support.

D.Teach children not to raise pets at home.

【3】Why is it illegal to leave a pet in a car in some laws?

A.It may escape and run into traffic.

B.It may become lonely and bored.

C.It may suffer from being in intense heat.

D.It may require something to eat.

【4】What's the best title of the text?

  • 29、A Spanish company has opened the first public napping space in Madrid. Siesta & Go promises the Spanish people a quiet and restful getaway in the city’s business center.

Napping spaces are already nothing new places in other big cities in the world. But the idea would appear to work well with the culture of Spain, where people traditionally take a midday nap.

The Madrid nap bar recently opened with 19 beds. They can be rented by the minute or by the hour. People can choose either a private or shared room. An hour of napping time inside a private room costs about $ 15.

The company also offers areas to work, as well as armchairs, newspapers and coffee for those not wishing to sleep. Philip Marco is one happy customer. He says he gets tired during the day because he has a long drive to work. He says the midday nap is the perfect way to build up energy. “I come for about 30 minutes, something like that. Sleeping for 30 minutes usually is enough for me to be able to get through the evening.”

Siesta & Go provides all bedding, clean nightshirts and other materials. Nappers can request to be woken up when their time is up.

While many Spanish people love their midday naps, others like Carlos Villarroja say they are just too busy to keep this tradition. “It’s a Spanish tradition, but I think it’s more of an impractical thing than a tradition. Because with the lifestyle we have the working hours, we have very little free time for a nap, in my case, at least during the week.”

But many health experts believe there is evidence that taking a short nap is very good for the body and mind. Scientific studies show that taking a nap can also prevent heart disease, lower blood pressure and reduce stress.

1The Madrid nap bar don’t allow customers to______________ .

    A. share a room with others   B. choose a private room

    C. use it as an office   D. sleep for free

2What does Philip Marco feel about the Madrid nap bar?

    A. Happy.   B. Worried.

    C. Amazed.   D. Tired.

3Why does Carlos Villarroja regard a midday nap as an impractical thing?

    A. It is not necessary to take it.

    B. Many people have no time to take it.

    C. No research proves the good of taking it.

    D. Many people have no spare money to pay for it.
