二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Imagine this: you are twenty-one years old and a promising graduate student at one of the top universities in the world. One day, your doctor tells you that you have an incurable disease and may not have more than twelve months to live. How would you feel? What would you do? Here is what Stephen Hawking thought:

There did not seem) much point in working on my PhD-I did not expect to survive that long. Yet two years had gone by and I was not that much worse. In fact, things were going rather well for me and I had got engaged to a very nice girl, Jane Wilde. But in order to get married, I needed a job,and in order to get a job, I needed a PhD.

Instead of giving up, Hawking went on with his research, got his PhD and married Jane. Nor did he let the disease stop him from living the kind of life he had always dreamt of. He continued his exploration of the universe and travelled around the world to give lectures. As his disease has disabled him, Hawking has to sit in his now-famous wheelchair and speak through a computer. He talked about his theories and thoughts on some of the greatest questions: What is time, how did the universe begin, and what exactly are black holes?

Hawking became famous in the early 1970s, when he and American Roger Penrose made new discoveries about the Big Bang and black holes. Since then, Hawking has continued to seek answers to questions about the nature of the universe. In 1988, he wrote A Brief History of Time, which quickly became a best-seller. Readers were pleased and surprised to find that a scientist could write about his work in a way that ordinary people could understand. The book sold more than 5.5 million copies in 33 different languages.

1According to the quote in paragraph 2, when was Stephen Hawking told about his disease?

A.Twelve months earlier. B.When he was getting married.

C.Two years earlier. D.When he met Jane Wilde.

2Why did Stephen Hawking think: “There did not seem much point in working on my PhD?”

A.Because there was no point in being a PhD. B.Because he thought he would die soon.

C.Because there was no hope of being PhD. D.Because he had no place to work.

3What made Hawking known to the world in 1970s?

A.His book A Brief History of Time. B.His discovery about the Big Bang and black hole.

C.His fighting against the disease. D.His lectures to university students.

4What can we learn from Steven Hawking?

A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.Every road leads to Rome.

C.Practice makes perfect. D.Better late than never.

  • 27、Being deaf in a hearing world can lead to painful feelings of isolation (孤独).

Waitress Kelsey recently shared an experience on a social media sharing site that   quickly zoomed (陡直上升) to the top of the “ front page of the Internet”. In her brief post, Kelsey explained that she waits tables at a bar during the evenings, and one night she noticed a deaf man sitting alone in her section (区域).

When Kelsey isn’t working at the bar she makes a good hourly pay doing sign language interpretation (翻译), so she sensed an opportunity to use her skill to make this customer feel a little less alone in the world. She approached his table and began chatting with him in sign language.

When the table next to his noticed their silent conversation they asked Kelsey how long she’d been signing. They had a brief conversation about her goal of becoming certified (合格的) to interpret sign language in a medical or mental health setting. She didn’t think much about the whole exchange until the customers had left the restaurant and she was tidying up the tables. There, on the table of the customers who’d seen her American sign language conversation with the deaf man, was a handwritten note on the receipt.

“Thank you for what you do; it absolutely matters!” the note said. “Good luck with finishing your degree!” Not only that, but they’d left her a $100 tip.

Kelsey was moved by the kind note, especially because she wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. To her, she was just conversing with someone in a language that only they understood. Yet to the deaf man and the people seated next to him she’d bridged a gap and helped someone who probably feels lonely a lot of the time.

Kelsey shared the note on the Internet to spread more love and light in the world.

    1. Act first. 【1】 If you want to improve your relationship with your parents, you should start right away and act first.

    2. Be grateful. Let your parents know that you are grateful for all that they have done for you. It can hurt to feel taken for granted, even for parents. 【2】 Get them a nice gift or do some extra housework without being asked. They will likely be happy with you for this.

    3. Take their perspective. 【3】 They grew up in a different generation with different social norms and rules of conduct, with different technologies and ways of thinking, with parents who treated them in different ways. Think about the ways that their lives may have been different from your life, and how these different histories may be contributing to issues in the relationship.

    4. Develop your own identity. 【4】 Be sure to honestly answer questions such as “what feelings do I want to feel most?” or “what are my talents?” or “what should I spend more of my time on?” In gaining a new sense of autonomy and separation from your parents, you may find that your relationship improves gradually.

  • 29、   Computers have become so smart during the past 20 years that people don’t think twice about chatting with digital assistants like Alexa and Siri. But that required hard work from computer scientists like YoshuaBengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun. They tapped into their own brainpower to make it possible for machines to learn like humans, a breakthrough now commonly known as “artificial intelligence”, or AI.

Their insights and persistence were rewarded with the Turing Award, an honor that has become known as technology industry’s version of the Nobel Prize. The award marks the latest recognition of the instrumental role that artificial intelligence will likely play in redefining the relationship between humanity and technology in the decades ahead.

Over the past 30 years, Mr. Bengio, Mr. Hinton, and Mr. LeCun have mostly worked separately on technology known as neural (神经的) networks. These are the electronic engines that power tasks such as facial and speech recognition, areas where computers have made huge improvements over the past decade. Such neural networks also are a key part of robotic systems that are automating a wide range of other human activities, including driving.

Their belief in the power of neural networks was once looked down upon. “For a long time, people thought what we were doing was nonsense,” Mr. Hinton said in an interview with The Associated Press. “They thought we were very misguided and what we were doing was a very surprising thing for apparently intelligent people to waste their time on. My message to young researchers is, don’t be put off if everyone tells you what you are doing is silly.”

While the AI revolution is raising hopes that computers will make most people’s lives more convenient and enjoyable, it’s also arousing fears that humanity eventually will be living at the mercy of machines. Mr. Bengio, Mr. Hinton, and Mr. LeCun are also concerned that AI technology might be developed into weapon systems that wipe out humanity.

But they are far more optimistic about the other prospects of AI — empowering computers to deliver more accurate warnings about floods and earthquakes, or detecting health risks, such as cancer and heart attacks, far earlier than human doctors.

1Why does the author mention Alexa and Siri in the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic of AI. B.To stress the significance of computers.

C.To distinguish between types of AI. D.To encourage the use of digital assistants.

2What role do neural networks play in AI?

A.They make electronic engines work. B.They match up people’s faces with voices.

C.They contribute to robotic automation. D.They enable humans to learn like machines.

3Why are people concerned about AI?

A.It is a total waste of money. B.It is likely to bring disasters to human beings.

C.It is a real risk to public health. D.It is ineffective in forecasting natural disasters.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.What Is AI? B.AI Scientists Rescuing Human Beings

C.Why Is AI Popular? D.AI Pioneers Awarded Tech’s “Nobel Prize”
