二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What is the secret of happiness? A new study finds that happiness comes from exercise. People who exercise actively bring themselves happiness equal to earning an extra $ 25,000 a year.

Instead of recording extra hours at work in hopes of getting a raise, maybe you should hit the gym instead, as it could make you just as happy as that extra money. An interesting new study, published in the Lancet, found that people who are physically active have a greater sense of well—being than those who are inactive-and that active individuals feel as good as inactive people who earn $ 25,000 more per year.

Researchers from Oxford and Yale Universities used data gathered from more than 1.2milion Americans. They were asked, “How many times have you felt mentally unwell in the past30 days. for example, due to stress, depression, or emotional problems?” Participants were also asked about their exercise habits and were able to choose from 75 diverse physical activities, including doing housework and childcare, running, weightlifting, and cycling. The researchers found that people who exercise regularly feel bad for an average of 35 days per year, while inactive people feel bad for an additional 18 days.

All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden. Social physical activities (that is to say, team sports such as football, basketball, etc) had an even more positive effect, which can best help people relax mind.

It is possible for some to get too much exercise. From Business Insider's report on the study. “The mental health of those participants who exercised for longer than three hours a day suffered more than that of those who weren't particularly physically active.” The ideal amount seems to be three to five training sessions per week. lasting 30 to 60 minutes each.

But the conclusion should be that any amount helps, so don't stress about hitting that perfect balance: “All exercise types were associated with a lower mental health burden than not exercising.”

【1】The question asked in Paragraph one is meant to ______.

    A.introduce the researchers

    B.tell the secret

    C.draw a conclusion

    D.lead to the topic

【2】Which exercise below can help us relax mind most effectively?

    A.Running

    B.Walking alone.

    C.Playing football

    D.Keeping fit in the gym.

【3】According to the passage, the following are true EXCEPT that ______.

A.people who exercise actively may feel bad for about 35 days per year.

B.The more exercise you take, the higher mental health burden you will get.

C.overdoing exercising will do harm to people's mental health.

D.doing exercise is better than not doing it.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Exercise can bring as much pleasure as an income rise.

B.The secret of happiness has nothing to do with wealth.

C.Choosing the right form of exercise is of vital importance.

D.The key to keep young is to exercise regularly.

  • 27、Rainbow-coloured rubbish is the colourful waste created by a Swedish city with a unique recycling system. Like many cities in Sweden, Eskilstuna has an impressive recycling record. It met the EU's 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago. But almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code.

The reason for this becomes clear at the city's recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up (混乱) because they're collected altogether, once a fortnight from outside people's houses. But thanks to those bright colours, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The foodwaste in green bags is processed on site into slurry (浆) to make biogas, which powers city's buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution, so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things.

Like the rest of Sweden, Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill (垃圾堆). Waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases. As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may look to Eskilstuna as an example to follow—as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting at home.

【1】How do people in Eskilstuna follow a strict recycling policy?

A.They recycle waste at their homes.

B.They send waste to recycling plants.

C.They spray waste with colorful paints.

D.They pack sorted waste with color bags.

【2】What is the advantage of the bright colour code?

    A.It avoids cross-pollution entirely.

B.The waste can be stored in a fixed site.

C.The bags take on a colorful look.

D.The bags can be easily classified.

【3】What does the underlined word 'incinerated' in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Burnt.

    B.Broken.

    C.Buried.

    D.Wrapped.

【4】Which would be the best title for the passage?

A.Tips on how to sort household waste

    B.A Swedish city's recycling efforts

C.Measures to collect messy waste bags

    D.A new policy for conservation

  • 28、Four Best Places to Travel for the Summer of 2019

If you're still deciding where to take your summer vacation, 2019 brings major anniversaries, new flight routes, buzzy museum openings and more. In no particular order, check out our picks for where to travel this summer:

    Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni, or Uyuni Salt Flat, is a vast expanse near the Bolivian Andes that resembles ice. The surreal landscape is actually leftover salt from ancient lakes. A large lounge dome offers a public space with tables, floor cushions and hanging lanterns. Food is provided by Gustu in La Paz, considered one of Latin America's top restaurants. Beyond simply enjoying the food and scenery, guests can hike to the crater of Tunupa Volcano, mountain bike across the Salar or visit the village of Jirira. Come nightfall, on-site telescopes take full advantage of the star-flooded sky.

    Las Vegas

There's the Park Theater, where up to 5,200 people can enjoy A-list artist residencies: Lady Gaga is currently in residence until November, with Janet Jackson and Cher starting this summer. For good measure, Bruno Mars will also be performing some dates in September. Daniel Humm and Will Guidara, perhaps best known for NYC's Eleven Madison Park restaurant, are behind the NoMad Restaurant and NoMad Bar. And foodies will no doubt want to experience Roy Choi's Best Friend, the first brick-and-mortar restaurant following his hugely successful Korean BBQ truck.

    Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia often gets overlooked for popular provinces like British Columbia and Quebec, but its quiet charms are worth exploring. Cape Breton Island takes a bit of work to reach, but it's here that you'll find challenging hiking trails, a scenic driving route minus the traffic and real-deal Celtic culture. The Halifax Jazz Festival, held in the province's capital, is considered Nova Scotia's largest music festival, and goes down from July 9-14 on the waterfront.

    Grand Canyon

It's the Grand Canyon's 100th anniversary as a national park, and there are multiple ways to celebrate this notable occasion. From June 22-29, stargazers can join amateur astronomers for free at the park's North and South Rims for the Star Party. Telescopes will be on hand to find planets (Jupiter and Saturn among them), star clusters and nebulae. There will also be slide show programs with a different focus each night, from protecting dark skies to learning how planets form. Constellation talks and night sky photography workshops are among the free offerings, just allow yourself enough time since you won't be the only one with this idea.

1Which place will you choose if you want to have a great barbeque?

    A.Salar de Uyuni B.Las Vegas C.Nova Scotia D.Grand Canyon

2Which country is Nova Scotia probably in?

    A.Canada B.America C.Britain D.South Africa

3If you are an Astronomy fans, which two places will be the best choice?

A.Salar de Uyuni and Las Vegas B.Salar de Uyuni and Grand Canyon

C.Las Vegas and Nova Scotia D.Las Vegas and Grand Canyon

  • 29、   One day, a strong tall man broke into Eric’s home, shot and killed her mother in her presence. Nearly scared to death, she screamed and escaped. Then the child hadn't talked about her mother ever since. She just went into silence.

The first time she was introduced to my class, I decided to help the silent girl, who apparently had the pain of living without her mother.

However hard I tried, day by day, week by week, my efforts seemed to be in vain, as I didn’t seem to get any closer to Eric. Admittedly, my faith was fading away with the coldboring March days draggingI felt my heart was broken and ached desperately. I doubted whether this girl was able to come alive. I wondered when it was that she was able to respond to me actively and be aware of the fun, the beauty and the fantastic world around her.

Then on a late March dayJudy, one of the school children excitedly claimed that she had seen a beautiful bird in the schoolyard, sign of spring. "Spring's here!"all the children cried delightedly when they flocked to the window to see the bird"Let's make a flower border for the room to welcome spring!"

Why not? Anything to lift our spirits is goodWe selected colourful papers with brown strips for our basketsShowing the children how to weave the baskets and how to decorate all the flowers to welcome early spring, I carefully put the beautifully colored papers on Eric’s desk and encouraged her to have a goThen I spent the next hour sorting out strips of paper at the back of the room while the children were doing their own creating busily.

Suddenly Judy came hurrying to meher face red“Come and see Eric’s basket. It looks extremely charming!”

I held my breath at its beauty, “Eric, it is so fascinating! Tell me how you ever managed it.” She looked up at me with a warm smile, her eyes shining like any normal kid“My mother was fond of flowers,” she said clearly“Mother had all kinds of beautiful flowers growing in our garden

Eric’s basket was placed in the very center of the border at the front of the classroom and remained there until late in June when school was to endOn the last dayEric was carrying it out of the door carefully when she came running back towards me. She pulled a flower made of red paper from her basket and presented it to me, hugging me gently

I've kept this special gift in my room ever since then. I cherish it because it always reminds me of the power of love and faith

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.

The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn't know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.

By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand.

There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

    Paragraph 1:

With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the receiver and dialed.

    Paragraph 2:

One look at Molly and the woman’s face lit up like a Christmas tree.
