二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   People need light for daily activities, but in some places in the world, access to reliable power is a problem, and natural disasters can make the matter worse.

Andrea Sreshta and Anna Stork understand how important light is to people in need. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Andrea and Anna, then graduate students in architecture and design at Columbia University, wanted to do something to help.

So as a school assignment, they designed a lighting product that was lightweight, portable  and  wireless,  something  that  might  help  improve  the  safety  and  living conditions of Haitians. The result was the LuminAID light. An inflatable( 可充气的 )plastic, waterproof rectangle light that can be recharged with solar power. What was only a school project for them soon became something much more when friends and contacts began sending the lights to those in need.

In their final year of architecture school, Andrea and Anna filed a patent for the lamp, and shortly after graduating, they went to India to conduct field tests on their prototype( 维形). Anna says visiting villages without stable access to electricity was really meaningful to them. “It helped us understand the houses and the conditions that these people were living in. And what was so interesting is one of the villages that we’ve visited. The house was made out of really thick cement( 水泥), so even in the daytime, it was completely dark inside the house. So we saw real need for portable lighting, “Anna says.

In 2011, Andrea and Anna launched their business LuminAID. They say that after hearing from people who use the lights, they now realize how important their product is.

1How did Andrea and Anna help Haitians?

A.They invented a type of light for Haitians.

B.They donated some money to Haitians.

C.They sent some lights to Haiti.

D.They recharged some lights with solar power.

2What can we learn about the LuminAID light?

    A.It’s originally a school task.

B.It’s sold only to individuals in need.

C.It’s for villagers with stable access to electricity.

D.It helps understand the conditions of the villagers.

3Why did Andrea and Anna go to India?

A.To find the need for portable lighting.

    B.To visit some interesting villages.

C.To apply for patent on the lamp.

D.To test their lighting product in the target market.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Give Light, Get Light

    B.Little Light, Big Difference

C.Andrea and Anna’s Journey of Learning

D.A New Access to Reliable Power

  • 27、   I teach online and have been doing so for years .I understand the value of traditional face-to-face course offerings for certain courses and certain subjects. I doubt an online course in chemistry can ever be as effective (有效的) as a face-to-face course held in a lab. Fortunately, I teach writing, and the Internet is an effective place for teaching subjects that call for careful reading and discussion.

It is true that there are things I cannot do in my classes on the Internet. It is also true, however, that there are things I cannot do in my classes held in traditional classrooms. So the question we should ask is: What works better or worse in face-to-face classes rather than in online courses, and vice versa(反之亦然)?

One of the things I value most in my online classes is the necessity for everyone to take part in order to show their presence. In my face-to-face classes, a student can sit quietly and appear to be engaged in(积极参与) the discussion without ever offering a thought or opinion. Online, I consider a student who sits quietly but who does not join in the discussion to be simply not present. Further, students in face-to-face classes who are too shy or who are talked over by quicker and louder voices have the chance to take part in an online discussion.

When I teach online, my students and I can be inside or outside and we can sit wherever and however we want. In Michigan, where a winter storm can make going to campus dangerous or even impossible, the ability to learn in class from the comfort of wherever you live is a big advantage. When the weather is not nice, I often teach while sitting in a local coffee shop. When the weather is nice, I often teach while sitting in my backyard.

I agree that online education is not a “recipe (秘诀)for personal success.” Then again, I’m not sure traditional face-to-face education is such a recipe, either.

1What does the author think of online courses and traditional courses?

A.Chemistry courses can be done online.

    B.Online courses are more popular.

    C.Traditional courses are more helpful.

    D.Both have their advantages.

2How can shy students benefit from online discussion?

A.They can do a better job than louder students.

B.They can sit quietly to listen to others opinions.

C.They can think independently and take an active part.

D.They can appear to be engaged in online discussion.

3Which advantage of online teaching is mentioned in Paragraph 4?

A.It is much safer. B.It is less affected by weather.

C.It is more comfortable. D.It happens anytime.

4What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Why I teach online. B.I’ m online.

C.A recipe for success. D.A new teaching style.

Middle English is the name 1(give) to the English used from around the 12th to the 15th centuries. Many things played a part in the 2(develop) of this new type of English. The most important 3(贡献) was from the Normans, a 4 (French speak) people who5 (打败) England and took control of the country in 1066. 6, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as much as the Angles and the Saxons’ victory about 600 years earlier, which led to Old English 7 (replace) Celtic. Even though the Normans spoke French for the e8 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English 9 the first language. On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even more words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French).
