四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、In order to deal with the shortage (短缺) of women’s restrooms in public places, unisex (不分性别的) public toilets have been introduced into many cities. Will you feel comfortable using such a public toilet? You’re welcome to share your ideas.

    Cathy (China)

Toilets should be separated into men’s and women’s. As a woman, I don’t want to share the same toilet with men which will make me feel embarrassed. I don’t think that making all the toilets unisex can solve this problem.

    Mark (Australia)

I think increasing the number of women’s toilets is the best choice. I always feel sorry for the ladies as there never seems to be enough toilets and they always have to wait in line.

    Roger (the US)

In the United States, there are lots of public unisex toilets. The toilet here is a one-room toilet, so each person can be alone with a locked door. When a woman leaves, a man can go in. In my opinion, it is silly and very ________ for men and women (and kids) to mix together in the same room!

    Nick (the UK)

There have been unisex toilets all over London for years. This just isn’t a big deal. If the doors offer enough safety and protection, I don’t have a problem with it in most situations. In France unisex toilets are also common, and they have been around for years.

1Why are unisex public toilets introduced?

    A. Because sharing is quite popular nowadays.

    B. Because unisex public toilets are very popular.

    C. Because people are looking forward to them.

    D. Because there aren’t enough restrooms for women.

2How ill Cathy feel if she has to use a unisex public toilet?

    A. Excited. B. Embarrassed. C. Upset. D. Worried.

    3What is Mark’s advice?

    A. It’s better for men and women to share the toilet.

    B. It’s necessary to build more toilets for women.

    C. It’s better to offer much protection for unisex toilets.

    D. It’s necessary to change some men’s toilets into women’s.

4Which of the following words can be put in “______”?

    A. dangerous B. interesting C. educational D. possible

    5What’s the passage mainly about?

    A. Why women’s toilets are fewer than men’s.

    B. How unisex public toilets become popular.

    C. Different opinions about using unisex public toilets.

    D. Different ideas about how to build public toilets.

  • 25、The first night that I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. A servant came to my house one day with an invitation from his Mr. Gatsby. However, most of the people at his parties were not invited—they just went there. Sometimes they came to the party and left without ever having met Gatsby.

I went over to Gatsby’s house at about seven o’clock. I felt nervous among all these people I didn’t know, so I walked around looking for Gatsby. I asked many guests where he was, but they all stared at me in such a surprised way that I decided to go and sit at the bar. I sat at a table where a man was sitting. The man at the table looked at me and smiled.

“I think I have seen you before,” he said politely. “Were you in the army during the war? Were you in the First Division?”

“Why, yes I was.” I was surprised.

The man and I talked for a while about some of the places we had been in the war. I learned that he lived in this neighborhood too, because he told me that he had just bought an airplane and planned to try it in the morning.

“Do you want to fly with me tomorrow, young fellow?” he asked.

I wanted to go and accepted. I was about to ask his name when he said to me, “Having you had a good time now?”

I smiled to my new friend, “This party is strange for me. I don’t even know the host. I haven’t met him yet. I live over there—I turned around and pointed my hand toward my house—and this man, Gatsby, sent over his servant with an invitation.”

For a moment, the man I was talking to looked at me as if he didn’t understand. “I’m Gatsby,” he said suddenly.

“What!” I cried. “Oh, I didn’t—I’m so sorry.”

“I thought you knew, young fellow. I’m sorry—I suppose I’m not a very good host.”

He smiled at me. His smile had a quality of comfort in it. It was a smile that you may only see four or five times in life. His smile seemed to say that the whole world was good and that you were also good. His smile understood you and it believed you.

His smile disappeared, and I looked at Mr. Gatsby for the first time. He was a handsome young man, about thirty years old and dressed very well. He spoke very politely and it was a little funny to me; most men his age were not so polite. He spoke as if he was carefully choosing his words.

    C.a-d-c-b-e

    D.d-a-e-b-c

【3】Why did Gatsby say “I suppose I’m not a very good host”?

    A.Because he didn’t hold a wonderful party.

B.Because he didn’t know “I” was his neighbour.
