  • 25、One day, on the way home from school, my mum told me she was going to make some new rules for me and my brothers and sisters. Before this, we knew she wanted us to be good, but we really didn’t have any rules. On the next day, she started giving us the “house rules”.

Clean your rooms every other day. Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. (that means sitting at the table, with clean hands). If mum is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet (that means turning down the music and the TV). Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. (that means lying in bed, with a clean face). Get up at 7:30 a.m. To get ready for school (that means your feet are on the floor, not just hanging off the bed). Take the rubbish to the trash can in the street on Monday morning before school. Clean the bathroom on Thursday.

Following these rules isn’t too hard, and sometimes it’s even fun. At other times, it can be difficult. For example, if your room is really dirty, and you can't finish cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it on the next day, along with anything else you have to do. That can be hard.

Mum made these rules because she loves us a lot. She wants us to learn how to be on time, be clean and neat, and be polite. Every day, we try to follow her rules.

    A. at 7:00 p.m.   B. at 7:30 p.m.

3What should the children do according to the new rules?

    A. Never watch TV again.   B. Clean their rooms every day.

    C. Help their mum to make dinner.   D. Clean the bathroom once a week.

4Which of the following can be used to describe the writer’s feeling about following these rules?

    A. Terrible.   B. Tiring.

    C. Not too hard.   D. Not very interesting.

5When does the writer feel it hard to follow the rules?

    A. When the rubbish is too heavy.   B. When there is a good show on TV.

    C. When there is a good show on TV.   D. When he can’t clean his dirty room on time.

  • 26、Body image—the way people feel about their appearance—is a big problem for many young people today. According to two different studies, more than half teenage girls in the United States think they should be on diet, and almost one in five teenage boys are worried about their bodies and their weight.

But what’s the cause? Many complain about the media. Turn on the TV, and you’ll likely see beautiful models, handsome actors, and fit sports stars. Open a magazine or newspaper, search the Internet, and it’s unlikely to be any different.

Many young people feel stressed to look like these “perfect” people. But for most, this is just not possible. In the United States, for example, the average woman is 163 centimeters tall and weighs 64 kilograms. The average model is 180 centimeters tall and weighs 53 kilograms.

When people don’t match up to these standards, many may develop low self-esteem. Some stop eating properly in order to lose weight. Others lose so much confidence that they start to run away from classroom activities at school.

Body image problems do not disappear as we get older, either. In the United Kingdom, for example, women over 50 spend more money on cosmetics(化妆品)than any other age group. Older men spend large amounts of money trying to avoid hair loss.

Is there a solution to the problem? A 2013 study in the United Kingdom recommended that body image lessons should be provided in schools. Others believe it’s a problem that all of society needs to face. As self-esteem advocate Meaghan Ramsy says, “we need to start deciding people by what they do, not what they look like.”

  • 27、“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.

But now... I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions and codes of behaviour on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered in the streets and didn’t know where to go. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself: “Is Father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”

Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous (蛮横的) words.

All the lights were off except Father’s.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of walking quietly into my room in my sleep and then tucking(把……裹住) me underneath the covers.

This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe... With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist (存在) at all. Love—is second to none.

【1】Decide which is the best order of the following according to what happened in the passage.

    a. I opened the door and entered the house.

    b. Sadly I ran out into the street.

    c. I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.

    d. I thought of my father’s kindness towards me.

    A.b-e-d-c-a

    B.b-e-c-d-a

    C.b-e-a-c-d

    D.b-e-c-a-d

【2】What made the writer think of his childhood?

A.The sight of the street lights.

B.The sight of the empty street.

C.The sight of a father with a child in his arms.

D.The sight of light in his own house.

【3】Why do you think the father often shouts at his son?

A.Perhaps the father is getting older and older.

B.Perhaps the son has already grown up.

C.Perhaps they never agree with each other.

D.Perhaps the father has got used to doing that.

【4】What conclusion can you come to after reading the passage?

A.The father treats his son in an unfair way.

B.In fact, the father is kind to his son.

C.The father is neither kind nor cruel to his son.

D.The father is always finding fault (过错) with his son.
