二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sam Trull has worked with wildlife for almost 20 years, but she first found her soft spot for sloths (树懒) in 2013 after moving to Costa Rica to work for a small wildlife recovery center called Kids Saving the Rainforest. On arriving there, she took a liking to a two-week-old orphaned (孤儿的) sloth named Kermie. Sloths hug each other for both safety and comfort, so Trull cared for him with tender love, meals, and hugs. Soon other baby sloths were brought in. It was then that she realized that helping the creatures survive was her true calling.

When the sloths were grown and healthy enough to depart, Trull and her team built a 19-foot-cubed cage near the recovery center and left the door open, so the four-legged friends could come and go freely. They spent enough time eating and exploring in the wild so that they could abandon the cage for good. Trull performed it successfully with several sloths who are now living healthily in the jungle. Their movements are tracked thanks to the collars they wear.

Keeping sloths wild and free is a complicated and expensive process. To make it more effective, Trull co-founded the Sloth Institute in 2014. In addition to the education program and the research into sloths, the institute also cooperates with other institutes to better learn how to prepare orphaned sloths brought to the institute for eventual re-entry into the rainforest. The institute is now going smoothly.

Trull published her new book called Slothlove, where she documented the sloths she had saved via photographs. She explained, “A lot of people don’t know getting hit by cars and getting caught in electric wires are particularly dangerous to sloths. People just think they’re adorable and take selfies with them, unaware that the sloth is stressed and upset.”

【1】What can we learn about Trull shortly after she got to Costa Rica?

    A.She helped kids to recover.

B.She cared for sloths for comfort.

C.She was at a loss how to cure Kermie.

D.She decided to work with sloths forever.

【2】Why did Trull and her team build the cage for the sloths?

    A.To limit their movements.

    B.To make them recover quickly.

C.To train them to adapt to the wild.

D.To reunite them with their mothers.

【3】What can be inferred about the Sloth Institute?

A.It is now open to tourists.

B.It will mainly educate the public.

C.It will let go more hand-raised sloths.

D.It is largely sponsored by other institutes.

【4】Why does the author mention Trull’s words in the last paragraph?

A.To stress her talent for photography.

B.To describe people’s love for sloths.

C.To introduce the popularity of her book.

D.To tell the reason for publishing her book.

  • 22、   I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless one.

Easier said than done, of course. I didn’t realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机). By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.

In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.

I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.

Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention,

1What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner?

    A.His willingness to help mom.

    B.His curiosity about machines.

C.His trouble in doing family chores.

    D.His discontent with existing cleaners.

2What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.The help from the author’s wife.

B.The financial problems of the family.

C.The tough process of the new invention.

D.The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.

3Why did the companies refuse to license the author’s technology?

A.They thought they might suffer loss.

B.They considered it not good enough.

    C.They faced legal problems themselves.

D.They had begun making such machines.

4What lesson may the author learn from the experience?

    A.Think twice before acting.

B.Failure is the mother of success.

    C.Actions speak louder than words.

D.A good beginning makes a good ending.

  • 23、If you’re a fan of fast fashion, your choices may be narrowing in the near future.

At the end of 2020, fast-fashion giant H&M said it would close 350 stores worldwide. Recently, Spanish fashion giant Inditex announced that it would close all its Bershka, Pull & Bear and Stradivarius stores in China. It all indicates that fast fashion is slowing down, noted the website Fast Company.

A major reason is the shift in the mindset(心态) of consumers. Millennials, those who were born in the 1980s or 1990s, are now the largest consumer group. Unlike their predecessors(前人), millennials are more financially stable, and thus low-priced fast fashion is not their priority. According to The South China Morning Post, more people are starting to care about quality and the stories behind a product.

Another factor is the growing concern over the fashion industry’s effect on the environment. As The New York Times noted, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water and three-fifths of clothes produced in a year end up in landfill(垃圾场). As there is more awareness of the climate crisis, younger people are pursuing more eco-friendly choices.

Molly, 22, is one of them. Before she went to college, she used to frequent fast-fashion shops like Forever 21 and H&M. But after taking a class that focused Fast fashion slows down on the environmental impact of clothing production, her preference changed. Now, she tries to shop in a way that is both sustainable(可持续的) and affordable: She shops second-hand. “My friend showed me how easy it was to be thrifty(节约的). and I developed a new personal style that focused less on trends but on basics that don’t go out of style.” she told MTV News.

In order to survive in the competitive market, many fast-fashion brands are making changes as well. For example, Inditex said that the company plans for all of its clothes to be sustainable by 2025.

“Sustainability is a never-ending task in which everyone here is involved.” said Pablo Isla. CEO of Inditex.

【1】Why is fast fashion unpopular among millennials?

    A.Millennials follow former generations’ style.

    B.Millennials prefer cheaper clothes.

C.Millennials attach more importance to quality.

D.Millennials like brands with a long history.

【2】What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

A.Unsold clothes are a threat to the environment.

B.Low-quality fashion products don’t last long.

C.Climate change should be blamed on the fashion industry.

D.More people prefer eco-friendly fashion products.

【3】What is Molly’s new way of shopping?

    A.She likes thrifty brands.

    B.She buys used clothes.

    C.She prefers trendy clothes.

    D.She buys only necessary clothes.

【4】The author used the example of Inditex at the end to show_________.

A.how competition is becoming more fierce in the fashion industry

B.how sustainability has become the top priority for most fashion brands

C.how the fast-fashion industry is suffering a big loss

D.how a major company can change their products to fit the market

【5】What is the author’s opinion on the future development of fast fashion?

    A.Promising.

    B.Hopeless.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Unpredictable.

  • 24、In 2009, biologist Charles Anderson put forward an assumption that globe skimmer dragonflies (蜻蜓) on the Maldives had flown in from what he assumed was India. When they flew off again, it was towards East Africa. 12 years later, a group of researchers decided to investigate his claim.

Globe skimmer dragonflies are too small to be fitted with electronic devices. Instead, the researchers examined its physical aspects and calculated how long a globe skimmer dragonfly could stay in the air using the energy that can be stored in its body. In addition, the researchers used wind models to determine if there are winds that facilitate the migration in both directions.

“Our study shows that this migration from India to East Africa is actually possible. However, the globe skimmer dragonfly can’t manage it using only the fat in its body. It also requires favorable winds and these are present during certain periods of the year,” says Johanna Hedlund, a biology researcher at Lund University. According to the migration experiments using wind models, about 15 percent of the dragonflies could manage the migration from India to Africa in the spring. In the autumn, 40 percent could make the same journey in the opposite direction.

Johanna Hedlund and her colleagues consider it impressive that dragonflies can do this at all. Even more impressive is the fact that the globe skimmer dragonfly migration across the Indian Ocean is the longest in the animal kingdom in relation to an animal’s size.

Other animals also rely on favorable wind conditions when they migrate. Two examples are the amur falcon and the Jacobin cuckoo, which also fly across the Indian Ocean. The researchers warn that climate change may affect the chances of these birds and the globe skimmer dragonfly in the future. There is a risk that wind patterns will change when the water surface gets warmer.

【1】How do the researchers mainly prove their assumption?

    A.By fitting electronic devices.

    B.By giving examples.

    C.By performing experiments.

    D.By making comparisons.

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.The dragonfly flies using the fat in its body.

B.15 percent of the dragonflies left Africa for Africa.

C.The dragonfly flies the longest in the animal world.

D.Charles Anderson spotted dragonflies flying to India.

【3】Why are two examples mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To illustrate how the animals fly.

B.To warn people of the climate change.

C.To evidence that water surface gets warmer.

D.To show the influence of wind on the migration.

【4】What’s main idea of the text?

A.Wind conditions are crucial to dragonflies.

B.Climate change may affect animals’ migration.

C.Dragonflies can migrate across the Indian Ocean.

D.Johanna and her colleagues investigate dragonflies.
