24、What comes to mind when you think of kung fu? If your mind is filled with images of Shaolin Temple(寺庙), Bruce Lee, or Kung Fu Panda, you wouldn't be wrong. But for Laurence J. Brahm, an American documentary filmmaker, the first thing that springs to mind is the concept of non-violence(非暴力).
As Brahm explained, if you break down the character “wu”, it consists of two characters: one is “ge”, meaning dagger-axe(戈); the other is “zhi”, meaning to stop. So, the meaning of martial arts(武术) in Chinese is not the art of fighting, a concept that many people take for granted. On the contrary, he said, kung fu is the art of stopping fighting.
Brahm’s relationship with kung fu dates back to the 1970s when he was a karate student in Hawaii. “My master always told me that if you want to fully understand karate, you have to go to Shaolin in China. That’s where the origin is,” Brahm said. In 1981, he managed to visit the Shaolin Temple, situated at the foot of the Songshan Mountain in Central China, for the very first time. He left the mountain, a little disappointed at not finding the martial-arts spirit he expected. But his passion for kung fu and his desire to find out more were stronger than ever before.
Over the years he trained in many different styles, such as tai chi, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do to understand all of them. “Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our neural system, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness. Martial arts is moving meditation,” Brahm said, his eyes bright and intense.
But to him, kung fu’s charm and values are far more than that. “Kung fu, in my eves, is a mirror of Chinese culture.” Brahm said “The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people.”
【1】What does Paragraph 2 really want to tell us?

D.He joined his knowledge and his experience together.

25、 Plants and animals have some very clever design features (特征). Scientists study these models. Then they can make new products using the ideas from nature.
Copying what we see in nature can improve how we travel. Japan’s first super-fast trains pushed air through tunnels at high speeds. When a train came out of a tunnel, it made a loud noise. Kingfisher birds hardly make a splash (溅水声) when they dive into water. Engineers changed the front of the trains to match the shape of the kingfisher. Then the air passed over the trains. The problem was solved!
People look underwater for ideas, too. Sharks have skin covered in special scales ( 鳞 ). These scales help sharks move quickly through water. Scientists have copied sharks’ skin to make swimsuits. Aircraft engineers also copied the scales. They made a coating for the wings of airplanes that is similar to sharks’ skin. Both the swimmers and the airplanes now travel faster.
Scientists studied how dolphins communicate to solve a big problem. Some earthquakes happening on the sea floor can cause tsunamis (海啸). People need to be warned if a tsunami is coming. Scientists use special tools to gather information on the sea floor. Then the information is sent to the surface as sounds. But on the way, the sounds can get muddled, so the scientists may not hear them.
Scientists studied the way dolphins “talk”. Dolphins have a clever way to send messages through water. Their system is better than some of our systems. Now, experts have copied the way dolphins send messages. This will help them track tsunami waves. Nature’s designs are built to last. When we observe the natural world, we can find wonderful ways to improve our lives. What ideas from nature will people borrow next?
The possibilities are endless!
【1】What did engineers copy from the kingfisher bird?
A.Its high speeds. B.Its special looks.
C.Its sound when it’s flying. D.Its ability to travel in water.
【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

B.Engineers have copied ideas from swimsuits.
C.People have copied ideas from sharks.
D.Shark scales are used to make wings of planes.
【3】What does the underlined word “muddled” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Not clear. B.Very loud.
C.Really strange. D.Quite terrible.
【4】What is the purpose of the system inspired by dolphins?
A.To look for dolphins. B.To help people ride waves.
C.To keep tsunamis away. D.To give early warnings.
26、Street dance is an energetic and exciting type of dance. It started with people dancing in the street rather than in studio(练功房).
Break dancing and the Melbourne Shuffle are two examples of street dance. Many of the hip-pop dances are popular street dance. Even rave dancing is a type of street dance. Street dance changes and improves all the time as people try different moves. It is a form of dancing that boys really enjoy.
A school in Britain has seen how street dance has helped its pupils. They introduced it as a subject at school. Dance teachers went to the school to teach the students how to perform. The dances were rehearsed at lunch breaks and after school. Many of the students were from homes with many problems. The students also used to behave badly. When the street dance classes started, it seemed to solve many of these problems. The students felt that they could express their feelings in dancing. If they were angry, they could do some of the dance moves and throw away those feelings. If they were angry at something, dancing helped them to be more peaceful. Another good thing was that the students felt better about themselves.
The students focused on other subjects more. They got better grades. Taking part in the street dance also taught the students to work better with others. They needed discipline(纪律)to come to practice and to learn the dance steps. They entered a dance competition and won! This was very good for them. The younger students began following them. They are active role models.
Today bands have formed that combine(结合)singing with street dance. Street dance is becoming a popular culture.
