Yet nine months after the IOC and organizers in Tokyo agreed to postpone the 2020 Summer Games for one year, the level of uncertainty surrounding the event has hardly waned, despite the fact that hopes for a successful Olympics have never been higher.

Will Japan open its borders, which have been largely closed since April, and allow the friends and families of Olympians, or any fans for that matter, to attend the Games? Will the Olympic Village, where most of the athletes and support staff usually live during the Games, function as a kind of bubble, with access to the city cut off? Japan has spent more than $12 billion preparing for the Olympics, although some estimates have put the actual figure at roughly $26 billion, including infrastructure projects. Postponing the Games for a year has cost organizers more than $1 billion. The IOC doubled its contribution to Tokyo organizers to $1.6 billion, to help cover the costs.

The overall budget includes $800 million from sales of some 7.8 million in tickets. For a typical Summer Games, overseas customers can account for about 30% of ticket sales. It’s hard to predict just how much financial loss Japan will suffer with a lack of overseas travelers to the Olympics.

28、Tesla, an electric car maker, announced a software update in July that allows games to be played on the cars’ central touchscreens while they are moving.

Tesla regularly sends updates, much like a smartphone update. At first it was only possible to play games on the touchscreen when the car was parked, but this has changed following the “2021.12.25.6” update, which was sent to owners in the UK, Europe and the US. Drivers can play games while moving. A notice appears on the touchscreen when a game is first chosen asking the player to prove that they are not the driver, but this can be avoided by simply pressing the “I am a passenger” option.

Tesla has provoked negative response. Road safety groups say that even if it is the passenger rather than driver playing, the game takes up the entire touchscreen and could take the driver’s attention from driving.

People have expressed worries about the update. In one YouTube video, by the channel The MegaWatts, which mostly reviews new Tesla characters, a driver going through the latest Tesla updates in his Model 3 car is shocked to find he can play games while driving with no one sitting in the passenger seat.

The update appears to break British law, which states drivers can only use screens when “viewing driving information related to the state of the car or its equipment, when navigation is shown, or when assisting in viewing the road around the car”, and that screens used for anything else “should not be seen by the driver while the car is being driven”.

In the US the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said what it was looking into the new update and was in discussions with Tesla about the changes. “Distraction-affected crashes are a concern, particularly in cars equipped with a group of convenience technologics such as entertainment screens.” it said.

29、Facebook was running my life.

But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.

“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval(赞同). I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
