二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Dogs are a very popular pet in the United States. Most dogs just live with their families, but some dogs have very special jobs to do.

A very special group of dogs are known as “Therapy (治疗) Dogs”. These dogs are family pets with special training. The training allows them to go into public buildings and comfort people in need. The dogs are trained to be calm and quiet. Loud noises and unfamiliar places don’t frighten them. Therapy dogs can improve people’s health as well. Studies show that when people spend time with animals, their blood pressure goes down. They are calmer, and their mood improves.

Some therapy dogs work in schools and libraries. In one town in California, therapy dogs have become children’s reading friends. The dogs belong to a therapy dog group. Eight of these special dogs have been trained to be listening friends for young readers. The library is trying to encourage kids to enjoy reading. The children are invited to meet at the library. They are paired up with a therapy dog and can read to it.

The dogs make a great audience. They don’t judge a child who cannot read well; they just listen quietly. The children can read at their own speed and they find it less nervous than reading in front of their class. The children look forward to reading to the dogs, and the dogs love the attention. • 27、It was the most important thing in my family —my piano recital (钢琴演奏会) tonight. My grandparents were coming by plane to hear me play. Even my busy Aunt Dianne, who is on TV every night reading the news, was coming.

But one thing was for sure. I would never win an award for my piano playing. And that’s just because the more I practiced, the more nervous I got. So there I was, on the stage, in my beautiful dress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play, I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadn’t practiced at all.

Finally the disaster was over. I ran off the stage. I couldn’t understand why audience were clapping. But they were. My mom and dad had flowers for me and we were all supposed to go out for a nice dinner, but I couldn’t. I just wanted to go home and cry and never go anywhere again. After we went back home, Aunt Dianne just came in and sat down on the side of my bed.

“It was my first night on the air,” she said. “I had never been on television before and I made a mistake. I mispronounced my name and the name of the news show. And you know what? No one even noticed but me. Just like tonight, no one noticed — just you.” Aunt Dianne was right. I think we are harder on ourselves than anyone else is. Maybe I will leave my room. And maybe I’ll play the piano again.

  • 28、   Maybe you have just been to the apple garden or maybe you couldn’t help yourself and brought the apples home from the grocery store. 1 Follow these easy tips and you’ll have good apples for two or three weeks at least.

Figure out where you’re going to put the apples first . When fully ripe(成熟的), apples become soft. 2They give off a chemical called ethylene gas that continues to soften the skin day after day. Keeping apples cold helps to slow the discharge of this gas, so place them in the drawer of the refrigerator to keep them cool.

3 They can be stored in a basket in a cool area of your home like a basement. A wire multi-type container is a great option because it allows air to circulate(流通) around the apples while they are being stored. If space is a problem, a wire hanging basket will offer the same benefit without taking up floor space. 4 That way, the air will not circulate easily, which can lead the apples to go bad.

To store apples for a long time, you had better wrap each apple lightly in a newspaper and place it in a wire container in a cool area of your home. Spin the apples regularly and remove those that are becoming soft. When considering long-term storage, look for Fuji, Granny Smith and Macintosh apple varieties. 5 Apples that are softer will not store as long.

A.Are they the right apples you like to have?

B.Don’t simply place them in a hardboard box.

C.They continue to ripen even after they are picked.

D.Keep them separate from other fruits and vegetables.

E.These types of apples are generally much firmer and have thicker skins.

F.But what if you have too many apples to easily fit in your refrigerator?

G.Either way, you want to keep the apples fresh and delicious as long as possible.

  • 29、   Recent research shows the importance of friendship, and its influence on mental and physical health. Preschool friendships are helpful in developing social and emotional skills, increasing a sense of belonging and reducing stress. People who feel lonely tend to be more depressed, have more health problems and may have a shorter lifespan.

Paul Schwartz, a professor of psychology and child behavior expert, has noted the many benefits of childhood friendship. “Friendships significantly help the development of social skills, such as being sensitive to another’s viewpoints, and learning the rules of conversation and age-appropriate behaviors,” Schwartz said. More than half of the children with emotional behavioral problems have no friends or find difficulty interacting with peers.(同龄人).”

“Friends also have a powerful influence on a child’s good or poor school performance, and may also help encourage or discourage deviant(反常的) behaviors,” he continued. “Compared to children who lack friends, children with good friends have higher self-worth, act more socially, and can deal with life stresses and transitions(过渡期).”

Both boys and girls form strong attachments to others and both need social and emotional support. Unfortunately, stereotypes(固有形象) of boys often send the message that boys don’t feel as strongly or form the same type of attachments in their friendships, but this is wrong. It’s human nature to attach to certain people and want closeness and support from others, regardless of gender.

At Powell Elementary School in Washington, all the teachers make an effort to place children in classes with others with whom they have developed friendships. This is designed to help children maintain(维系) special relationships.

Jason Harris, a prekindergarten teacher at Powell, said efforts to place children in classes with their friends have proven to be beneficial. “This year I am sending half of my class to kindergarten,” Harris said. “They will probably be nervous in the fall but less so because they will have a few warm faces who are happy to see them when they step in that classroom for the first time.”

“I do not believe that children can learn if they do not feel comfortable and valued the classroom,” said Amy Symonds, another prekindergarten teacher at the school.

There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for friendship; people develop socially in different ways. There’s, however, ways to help children develop relationship skills that will build deep, meaningful connections with others. And it’s important to note that the benefits of friendship are based on quality, not quantity.

1What can we learn from Paul Schwartz's words?

A.Kids should stay away from friends who are bad influences.

B.Children who lack friends are less likely to be respected by peers.

C.The development of adults' social skills depends on preschool friendships.

D.Over half of children's behavioral problems are caused by their interaction with peers.

2What is the fixed idea that people have according to the text?

A.Girls don't need to form strong attachments to boys.

    B.Loneliness contributes a lot to a person's shorter lifespan.

C.Boys need less closeness and support from other than girls.

D.It's hard for boys and girls to form the same type of friendship.

3The strategy used at Powell Elementary School is to help children ________.

A.develop special relationships with their teachers

B.lessen their fears about the transition to a higher grade

C.learn as much social and cultural knowledge as possible

D.follow class rules and change age-in appropriate behaviors

4Following the last paragraph, the author would most probably further talk about ________.

A.when and where to develop friendships

B.what developing childhood friendships is for

C.how to help develop warm childhood friendships

D.whether to develop more childhood friendships or not
