  • 27、   The world’s first hydrogen-powered (氢动力的) trains have begun running in Germany. They began carrying passengers on Monday in Germany’s northern Lower Saxony state. The new trains will run 100-kilometre trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers per hour.

A French railroad company called Alstom built the two trains. Teams in Germany and France worked together on the project, which was supported by the German government. The new train model, called the Coradia iLint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel (柴油) trains.

The Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise. It uses a process that combines hydrogen with oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions (排放物) are water and steam.

Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains to Lower Saxony by 2021.

The head of railroad operations in the area, Carmen Schwabl, praised replacing diesel trains with hydrogen-powered trains. She said the move was an important first step in using clean-burning technologies to reach climate protection goals.

Alstom says several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France have already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be on the rails by 2022.

1Why did Germany build the new trains?

    A.To replace diesel trains.

    B.To carry more passengers.

    C.To make traveling much faster.

D.To improve the relationship with France.

2What is one advantage (优势) of hydrogen-powered trains over diesel trains?

    A.They are cheaper to build.

B.They cost much less to run.

    C.They don’t use electrical power.

D.They run without making any noise.

3What can we know about hydrogen trains?

    A.They are widely used nowadays.

    B.They are environmentally friendly.

C.They can contribute to air pollution.

D.They can produce water and oxygen.

4Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Saving Natural Resources

    B.Efforts to Reduce Emissions

C.A New Way to Make Electricity

    D.The World’s First Hydrogen Trains

  • 28、When Huang Lizhi took her first class in African sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in February, her professor asked her and her classmates what impresses them most when it comes to Africa.

Unexpectedly, Huang, 31, found that words like “poverty” and “safari” – negative words that were often associated with the continent in media reports – were the kind of terms her African classmates didn’t want to hear. Instead, they preferred to hear the question answered in this way: “Africa is the cradle of humankind” and “Africans are passionate and generous”.

Apparently, there are some misunderstandings between us. It’s true that with incidents like the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the emergence (出现) of pirates off the coast of Somalia hitting the news, it’s easy for us to keep forgetting that Africa has one of the world’s oldest civilizations – Egypt, born by the world’s longest river, the Nile. The proof is in the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza, which are both popular among tourists. And the tombs of ancient Egypt have also become endless sources for the literature and film industries.

When it comes to the natural environment of Africa, our misunderstandings are only bigger. But the truth is that instead of being extremely hot all year and covered by desert, the continent has large areas of savannas (稀树草原) where lions, giraffes and zebras live, the snowcapped Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – and even thick forest on the island of Madagascar. These misunderstandings are one of the reasons why the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held on Sept 3 and 4 – to understand each other better.

Indeed, only by visiting Africa herself did Huang see the convenient living conditions, the amazing natural beauty and the friendly people. In her eyes, her classmates were as hopeful about the future of their own countries as they were about Africa as a whole, and they were quick to demonstrate both their strong will and activity. “At that moment, I knew exactly what they wanted – they wanted their culture to be respected.”

【1】Which of the following best explains “cradle ” underlined in paragraph 2?

    A.A small bed for babies.

    B.A basket to hold something.

C.A place for people to relax themselves.

D.A place where something important began.

【2】What can we infer about Africa according to the passage ?

A.It is very hot all the year round.

B.It’s not a safe continent to live in

C.It’s different from what we imagine.

D.It is bound to have a bright future

【3】Which of the following would Huang agree with ?

    A.To see is to believe

    B.Think twice before you do

C.A miss is as good as a mile

D.Don’t judge a person by his appearance

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Valuing a Culture.

    B.Understanding Africa.

    C.Paying a Visit to Africa.

    D.Discovering a Continent.

  • 29、Dr Dian Fossey, one of the world’s leading women scientists, had a remarkable career. The work she devoted her life to protecting and studying the mountain gorillas (大猩猩) of Africa—has proved highly effective and has resulted in the steady (平稳的) increase of this most endangered great apes.

Fossey made her first trip to Africa in 1963. Three years later, she returned to Africa to begin a long term study of the mountain gorillas. She set up camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo but moved to Rwanda because of political reasons in 1967. She established her “Karisoke” Research Centre camp on September 24,1967.

Fossey’s aims were to study gorilla ecology(生态学) and social organization. She found that in order to achieve this, she needed to recognize individual gorillas, which required that the gorillas get used to her presence(出现). By copying gorillas’ behaviour and sounds, Fossey began to gain their trust, and in 1970 an adult male gorilla she had named “Peanuts” reached out to touch her hand.

Close observations over thousands of hours enabled Fossey to gain the gorillas’ trust and bring forth new knowledge about their behaviour. Stories and photographs of her work were published in National Geographic Magazine and elsewhere.

In 1977, one of Fossey’s favorite gorillas, Digit, was killed by poachers and she established the Digit Fund to help raise money for gorilla protection efforts in the same year.

On December 26, 1985, Fossey was murdered while going back to her house in Karisoke. Her body was discovered near the research centre. Most probably? Dian Fossey had been killed by the poachers she’d fought against. On her tombstone (墓碑): “No one loved gorillas more...”

In 1988, the life and the work of Fossey were made into a movie based on her book.

1Why does the author say Dr Dian Fossey “had a remarkable career”?

    A. Because she travelled all over the world.

    B. Because she liked to play with gorillas.

    C. Because she studied gorilla ecology.

    D. Because she made great apes increase steadily.

    A. sell drugs against the law

    B. hunt animals against the law

    C. hate successful people

    D. like to do harm to people

3From the words on Fosseys tombstone, we can infer that ________.

    A. Fossey was the person who loved gorillas most

    B. after Fossey died, no one loved gorillas

    C. Fossey was the first one to study gorillas

    D. everybody loved gorillas as Fossey did

4According to the passage, Fossey’s life can be described as ________.

    A. sad and unlucky

    B. lonely and boring

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.

For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 1 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 2 of Martian resources, including oxygen.

Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 3 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.

Earth Reliant explorations is 4 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.

Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 5 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 6 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.

Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 7 for Mars.

Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 8 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.

This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 9 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.

There are challenges to 10 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.
