二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Mark Twain’s real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Why is the man born as Samuel Clemens more widely known as Mark Twain? It has something to do with his love of the Mississippi River and his time as a pilot of the great steamboats. “Mark Twain” was an old term used on the river. It meant that the water was two fathoms or twelve feet deep, which meant it was safe.

This term was first used as a personal name by Captain Isaiah Sellers, an old, knowledgeable man. He liked to send his advice and opinion to local newspapers, where he named himself Mark Twain.

In 1861, Clemens wrote a very funny story about Sellers. The story was for Clemens’ own, and other pilots’ amusement. However, a man named Bart Bowen gave it to one of the New Orleans newspapers. Captain Sellers saw and read the piece, and was deeply hurt by it. He never published his opinion again, and Clemens felt bad about the part he had played in this.

In 1863, Clemens was out west, in Carson City. He heard that Sellers had passed away. Then he decided to use the name, Mark Twain, for himself. Soon, Clemens became known as Mark Twain, on paper and in real life.

In fact, he liked to be a steamboat pilot so much that he never considered any other profession. But in the Civil War, the use of all riverboats had to stop. Taking the boat back home on the Mississippi River was his last trip that had something to do with his life as a pilot.

  • 27、Don’t you just hate it when you have to take an important phone call and you’re surrounded by potential eavesdroppers(潜在偷听者)? You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private, which is not good. Now Hushme aims to fix this problem by muffling your voice and making you look like Bane in the film Batman.

Hushme is a strange high-tech mask(口罩)that blocks the sound of the wearer’s voice so that people nearby can’t hear what is being said. It connects to your phone via Blucetooth and comes with a pair of earphones. When you get a private call, all you have to do is put the mask on and it will do the rest. The pair of thick pads over your mouth does a good job of muffling your voice, but to ensure nothing gets through. Hushme also has speakers that play a variety of sounds when you speak.

The Hushme mask, which comes in a variety of colors, can be worn around the neck, like a regular pair of earphones, and attaches in front of your mouth thanks to a couple of very powerful magnets(磁铁). It’s not yet clear how comfortable speaking with this Bane-like mask over your mouth really is, or how effective its speech muffling ability is, so we know so far is that it makes you look strange. The sound choices for covering your voice currently include wind, ocean, rain, birds, monkey, but new ones could be added in the future.

Advertised as the “world’s first voice mask for mobile phones’. Hushme was showed at CES. At the becoming of this year. Its makers plan to sell it by the end of this year. It will cost about $200.

  • 28、Math teacher Curtis Taylor lives for those "aha moments" when he helps his students achieve a learning breakthrough. "I tell them all the time, 'I got goosebumps(鸡皮疙瘩)'". when he witnesses them move from confusion to understanding. And he has put in plenty of work—continuing his own education through master's degree and doctoral studies—to enhance his ability to help create those special moments in the classroom.

Originally from Greenville, S.C., Taylor recalls that the importance of education was strongly stressed in his own family. His aunt was an educator who went on to become a principal(校长), and his mom taught pre-K before turning to a career in nursing

Looking back, he says that a career in education was probably "my destiny"—though not necessarily his first choice. "I wanted to be a musician at one point. I loved music; I loved playing music. And I told my mom, 'Hey, I'm going to be a musical artist; I'm going to be famous.' Obviously, that didn't work out."

He was also interested in perhaps becoming a medical doctor. "Then I gave blood the first time and passed out and said, 'No, that's not going to work. '"

But his middle school had a job shadowing program, and he was inspired by what he saw while shadowing an instructor from University of South Carolina Spartanburg. In high school, he recalls helping his brother with his studies, explaining, "I was curious about teaching and wanted to know more, so I joined Teacher Cadets."

Advancing his own education to improve his skills as an educator is an everlasting theme. In terms of his own lifelong education, Taylor mentioned that his advanced studies helped him "understand clearly how to teach mathematics and how students think about mathematics."

【1】What does "aha moments" mean in the first paragraph?

    A.Moments of serious doubt.

    B.Moments of deep concern.

    C.Moments of sudden realization.

    D.Moments of great comfort.

    A.Taylor isn't afraid of blood.

  • 29、A boy playing in the woods noticed a cocoon(茧). While watching it, he suddenly found a small opening appeared, and that a butterfly struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. So the boy decided to help the butterfly.

He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. Much to his surprise, the butterfly got a swollen(鼓胀的)body but very small, weak wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The boy expected that the butterfly's body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would enlarge and be able to support the body. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬)around with a swollen body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The boy was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. The struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was the way of forcing fluid(流体)from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been. And we could never fly.

【1】What did the boy see the butterfly doing in the first paragraph?

A.It was flying difficultly in the woods.

B.It was trying to get out of the cocoon.

C.It was looking for food in a cocoon.

D.It was busy making a cocoon for itself.

【2】What would have happened to the butterfly without the boy's help?

A.The butterfly would come out easily.

B.The butterfly could crawl on its wings.

C.The butterfly would prepare for the flight.

D.The butterfly would never gain its freedom.

【3】What is the best title for the story?

    A.The struggle for freedom.

    B.A kind-hearted boy.

C.The joy of helping a butterfly.

    D.A lucky butterfly.
