27、Many people around me make a difference to the world on a daily bas — being kind in unexpected ways and sharing the generosity of their lives with others. I, like many of them, volunteer some of my time in order to give back just a little of what I am so blessed to have. I volunteered to go to Guatemala with an eyeglass team from International Relief Teams — an organization I have supported in other ways for many years.

Our team went to a small town in Guatemala, San Augustin. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work.

Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive, or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason.

It’s so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers’ small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not.

As those who could give them a hand, we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is — and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we’d like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted.

28、Chinese researchers say they believe a group of rockets could be used to change the path of asteroids that might pass near Earth.

A team at China’s National Space Science Center carried out simulations (模拟) on the proposed asteroid defense system. The scientists said their research suggests 23 rockets of China’s biggest kind of rockets could force a large asteroid to change direction. Most experts agree that there is only a small likelihood that a large asteroid or another space object will crash into Earth and cause great destruction. However, many organizations do recognize the real risk of such an event.

The Chinese research was based on defending against a specific asteroid, Bennu, which orbits the sun. Bennu is about a half-kilometer wide. It is considered a near-Earth asteroid. Bennu reaches its closest distance to Earth every six years. The researchers recently reported on their proposal in a study in a planetary science magazine called “Icarus”.

China’s Long March 5 rockets are a central part of the country’s space program. They have been used to launch space station elements and carry spacecraft to the Moon and Mars. China has successfully launched six Long March 5 rockets, since 2016.

Alan Green is a professor of astrophysics. He said he finds the idea of using rockets to act as an asteroid deflector (偏转器) “a rather nice concept”. Green continued, “By increasing the mass hitting the asteroid, simple physics should ensure a much greater effect.” He added, however, that the actual operation of such a mission needs to be studied further. Scientists say deflecting an asteroid’s path presents a lower risk than blowing up the rock with nuclear explosives, which may cause it to break into pieces without changing direction.

29、   In San Francisco, where the number of the homeless has risen by 7% in the last decade, a non-profit organization is putting bathrooms on wheels and driving them to those in need. The group, Lava Mae, is improving retiring city buses and bringing them into different neighborhoods, currently providing about 200 showers each week.

Doniece Sandoval, the founder of Lava Mae, first became interested in the issue in 2012, when she passed a young woman under an overpass near the San Francisco Design Center who was repeating to herself that she'd never get clean. 'It made me wonder what her chances were, ' said Sandoval, who was then inspired to research exactly how many public shower stalls(淋浴间)existed in the city. Her findings were disheartening.

So Lava Mae came together when she heard the city would be retiring cold city buses. 'I told myself, I want those buses!' she said.

Each bus has two private bathrooms, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Along with the basic shower, sink and toilet, the spaces have soft lighting, digital controls for water, and hair dryers.

'Though you're only going to be on the bus for 20 minutes or so, it's 20 minutes of complete privacy,' Said Sandoval.

The buses are parked near agencies that already serve the homeless. 'If we can reduce the amount of time people have to run from place to place to get essential services, we'll be able to make things better, ' said Sandova.

What's next for lava Mae? The group is starting a program so that others can mimic their process. 'What we're hoping to do is to get people to follow what we do, so they can recreate it.' she said.
