  • 26、Researchers from The University of Queensland(UQ) have helped design an app to protect birds at risk of extinction across the world by breaking down language barriers between scientists. The Bird Language Diversity web app will help provide a “birds eye view”, ensuring vital information is shared to improve worldwide conservation.

UQ’s Dr Pablo Negret said the research team analysed more than 10,000 bird species, and found that 1,587 species have 10 languages or more spoken within their distributions. “Scientific information on species can be spread across different languages, but valuable information can go missing or get lost in translation,” Dr Negret said. “Without enough sharing of information, this can affect the effectiveness of conservation measures.”

Take the common bird pochard for example. It is classified as vulnerable species(易危种) and crosses 108 countries in Europe, Asia and north Africa, where a total of 75 official languages are spoken. The survival of the common pochard, and so many other species, depends on effective cooperation and policy agreements among people with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

This app reveals where threatened and migratory birds(候鸟) exist geographically, in relation to the language spoken in those regions. “We hope the app will encourage researchers and conservation organisations to interact with their peers in other regions, especially if they speak different languages, and be a starting point to allow everyone to work together to protect threatened species,” Dr Negret said.

Dr Tatsuya Amano, a researcher and the co-author of the paper, said this work could extend further than bird species. “Any species, whether they're mammals, amphibians(两栖动物), or plants, with a range crossing multiple countries will be impacted by language barriers, as well as species that migrate across different countries, such as marine species and butterflies,” he said. “The significance of the impact of poor communication on such an important issue is evident, and is the reason why we’re working hard to improve science communication across languages.”

【1】How can the app help scientists globally?

    A.By creating language barriers.

    B.By building language bridges.

    C.By sharing learning methods.

    D.By breaking down race barriers.

【2】What is the function of adequate sharing of information?

A.Ensuring the effectiveness of protective measures.

B.Helping people know more about scientists' efforts.

C.Spreading knowledge of the diversity of birds worldwide.

D.Compromising the effectiveness of conservation measures.

【3】What is shown on the app?

    A.The producer of the app.

    B.The organizations involved.

    C.The location of endangered birds.

    D.The information of new geographers.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Birds Protection Is an Urgency

B.New Bird App Spreads Its Wings

C.New Bird App Helps Learn Languages

    D.Poor Communication Impacts Cooperation

  • 28、   Smart cities are coming. And you can be sure that hackers(黑客) won’t be very far behind.

We’ve already gotten a glimpse of that future, as cities across the globe start to use technology to connect their services and residents in ways that was science fiction just a few years ago. They are using sensors to collect data — such as traffic, garbage collecting, and road conditions —and then using that data to deliver services to more people and more efficiently.

But this rush to become a smart city has a major drawback: The more connected a city is, the easier it is to cyber-attacks. Hackers have, in recent years, effectively held cities hostage through ransom ware(赎金器), sometimes damaging critical systems for months at a time. The damage can cost millions to repair, as Baltimore and Atlanta have discovered.

And this is just the beginning. As cities add connectivity to their streetlights, power grids, dams, transit lines and other services, they are adding more targets that have the potential to be hacked. What’s more, as additional information on residents is collected, officials worry the result —lots of data could attract nation-states or terrorists who could incorporate the data into physical and cyber war.

What cyber security lesson can’t be taught in this hack? For example: Don’t open email attachments from unfamiliar sources; don’t click on unrecognized links; don’t leave sensitive information visible on the walls or surfaces of your office. But let’s just stick to the most important lesson: The information you share on social media can be used to profile and target you, whether that’s by engineering click bait(点击诱饵) aimed at your particular interests, guessing your password based on your birthday or figuring out your schedule and travels so that an intruder can access your home or office.

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.

  • 29、   On this first night as a trainee doctor in Sylhet, Bangladesh, Mohamad Chisti watched three children die of pneumonia(肺炎). A “low-flow” technique, which followed the World Health Organization guidelines for low-income countries, was used. But it failed. He decided to find a better way.

In 2015, 920,000 children under the age of five died of pneumonia, making it the leading killer of people in that age group. In Bangladesh pneumonia causes 28% of baby death.

Pneumonia is particularly threatening to malnourished(营养不良的) children. First, malnutrition weakens the immune system, making infection more likely. Second, a child with pneumonia breathes faster. But this takes a lot of energy, so malnourished children do not have the ability to keep such an effort up for long. Dr Chisti’s device is designed to reduce the effort required to breathe, and to do so cheaply. Because a ventilator(人工呼吸机) costs around $15,000.

His invention was inspired while visiting Australia. On this trip he was introduced to a type of ventilator called Bubble-CPAP. It channels the child’s out breath through a tube that has its far end put in water. The out breath appears from the tube as bubbles, and the process of bubble formation causes air pressure in the tube. These feed back into the child’s lungs. That improves the exchange of gases in the lungs and also increases the lungs’ volume. Both make breathing easier.

At about $6,000, standard Bubble-CPAPs are still expensive for many poor-country hospitals. However, when he picked up an abandoned shampoo bottle, Dr Chisti realized he could make something that did the same job. He made a device. The materials costs $1.25 and it worked.

In 2017, the number of children who died of pneumonia had fallen by three quarters since his Bubble CPAP was used in the hospital. Now, Dr. Chisti and his team are starting trials in Ethiopia. If it works as well there as it does in Dhaka, it will surely be taken up elsewhere.

1Why did Mohamad Chisti decide to find a better way?

A.He spotted the failure of the “low-flow” technique.

B.The “low-flow” technique was too expensive.

C.Not all the children could use the “low-flow” technique.

D.The “low-flow” technique caused the death of 3 children.

2What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.How to save a baby with a Bubble CPAP.

B.The working principle of Bubble CPAP.

C.The methods of helping the children in Australia.

D.Where Mohamad Chisti got the idea to invent something cheaper.

3What will happen if the new device spreads?

A.Mohamad Chisti will win a Nobel Prize.

B.More children with pneumonia will be saved.

C.Some medical companies will suffer a great loss.

D.A great deal of money will be saved to treat other patients.

4What can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Mohamad Chisti-an Inventor

    B.Pneumonia—a Leading Killer to Children

C.A Shampoo Bottle Is Saving Young lives

D.A Device Is Designed to Battle Against Malnourishment.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

  • 40、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I walked into the George Washington University Hospital with my therapy dog Willow on a late February evening, I had no idea that we were about to meet a young man, not even 25, fighting for his life in the ICU that night. Sam almost died when he was involved in an accident on his way home from work one day. He got numerous surgeries, among them two below knee amputations (截肢).

The ICU room was dark and cool when we entered. I could see Sam’s father sitting in a chair in a dark corner of the room, gazing down to the busy street below. He nodded hello, but did not speak. Sam’s mother was quickly pacing to and fro, trying to keep Sam comfortable and speaking encouraging words.

Sam was quiet. He was unaware at the time that he had lost his legs. But he just was not responding to the people in his room. Then something amazing happened; he saw Willow. I saw his hand slip from his lap to down below his bed rail and his fingers start to make a scratching motion. Willow ran right up to his bedside, expertly sliding her head right beneath his awaiting fingers.

I walked out of the ICU room completely overwhelmed with grief and a feeling of complete inadequacy in my ability to bring any kind of healing to this family. Just then I felt a strong grip on my forearm. I turned around and saw Sam’s mom.

“Will you come back tomorrow?” she asked.

I wanted to turn and run away, but I looked down at Willow, who had none of those feelings and whose eyes showed nothing but love and compassion, and before I knew it, the words “Yes, we will” had left my lips. I cried my whole drive home that night.

    注意:1. 写作词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I did come with Willow the next day, and so did the day after the next.
