  • 27、BEIJING Oct.16 (Friday) (Xinhua)—The Chinese government will make more support policies to lift the country’s 70 million poor people above the poverty line by 2020, President Xi Jinping announced on Friday ahead of the 23rd International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Addressing the Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum in Beijing, Xi said China will work to fight the hard battle against poverty. In his speech, Xi drew on his personal experience in the 1960s working as a farmer in a small village in northwestern Shaanxi Province, where he was struck by the poor living conditions in rural China. But over the past several decades, China has made remarkable progress in poverty relief.

China has lifted more than 600 million people out of poverty in the past 30 years, accounting for about 70 percent of those brought out of poverty worldwide. It was the first developing country to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target of reducing the population living in poverty by half ahead of the 2015 deadline. “Despite the achievements, China remains the world’s biggest developing country, and narrowing the urban-rural gap remains a big challenge for us,” Xi said.

As of the end of 2014, China still had 70.17 million people in the countryside living below the country’s poverty line of 2,300 yuan (376 U. S. dollars) in annual income by 2010 price standards. The president said poverty alleviation will be a major part of China’s post-2015 agenda. While struggling to reduce poverty at home, China has also actively supported the cause in other developing countries. Over the past 60 years, China has provided 166 countries and international organizations with nearly 400 billion yuan in assistance.

China has also announced seven times it would exempt, without any conditions, the matured inter-governmental interest free loans owned by heavily-indebted poor countries and least developed countries. At a United Nations summit last month the goal of eliminating poverty in 15 years was laid out and China pledged an initial 2 billion U.S. dollars to establish an assistance fund to help developing nations fight poverty.

In a video message for Friday’s Forum, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised China’s remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation, saying the UN welcomes those significant and generous proposals from President Xi and looks forward to further progress with an indispensable partnership with China.

Saturday also marks China’s second National Poverty Relief Day.

Develop a brief plan of action. 【1】 Set goals for yourself with time limits. Under each goal, create actionable steps that allow you to stay on track and succeed. You can plan out actionable steps like writing a speech, delivering the speech to an empty room, then to one person, and then to several people. 【2】

Use your strengths to build confidence. While you are working to overcome a weakness, work on. things you are good at, too. 【3】 It also keeps you looking competent and skilled while you build your skillset even more.

Rely on your network. Networking with others is a strength in any situation. Admitting that you need help in a certain area will help you to include team members and other partners in your tasks. 【4】 If you find it difficult to reach out or to rely on others, this might be your weakness! You can take steps to learn how to depend on others.

【5】 Your weaknesses are called weaknesses for a reason. It takes hard work and devotion to overcome them. Even if you fall short of a goal, acknowledge any progress that you did make. This will keep you in a positive frame of mind and help you pick up and continue overcoming the weakness.

  • 29、Virtual reality gamers (VR game) who finished it faster than their fellow gamers also have higher levels of general intelligence and processing capacity. This was the result of a study conducted by Markus Weinmann from the University of Cologne. The results also indicate that virtual reality games can be useful supplementary (补充) human resource management tools in companies for predicting the job performance of an applicant.

Several studies have already shown that video games may indicate or even help to develop intellectual and cognitive abilities. As intelligence is one of the most commonly used predictors for job performance, video games could be interesting for the human resource management. Although many companies are increasingly using VR technology to recruit (招募) candidates, only few studies have specifically investigated whether and how VR games can be used to draw conclusions about intelligence in this area. The study contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice.

Weinmann invited 103 participants to their lab. Under controlled laboratory conditions, they played the commercial VR game “Job Simulator”and completed the short version of the intelligence test BIS-4. The researcher’s analyses show that an increase of 17% in processing capacity correlated with less time spent playing the game (by an average of 3.7 minutes).

The results are a scientific novelty, as it has hardly been possible to conduct VR studies with state-of-the-art VR hardware. There are thus few studies that have investigated the correlation between behavior in VR and intelligence, “There are already some companies that use games, so-called ‘serious games’, for recruiting. The new results are in line with this specific application of VR games and show that they can be used for recruiting,” said Weinmann.

The scientists intend to continue their research on the potential of video games for practical applications. Among other things, they are investigating how people behave in virtual world.

【1】What can we learn from Weinmann’s study?

A.The results are far from satisfactory.

B.The participants can play the game freely.

C.It aims to develop intellectual ability.

D.It helps to combine research with practice.

【2】What is Weinmann’s attitude to the result of the study?

    A.Unclear.

    B.Intolerant.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Doubtful.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Limitations of the study.

    B.Possible directions for future study.

C.The present situation of the study.

D.The explanation of the research method.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.VR games can be used in recruitment

B.VR games can indicate intelligence level

    C.VR games improve applicants’ performance

D.VR games have gain popularity in management
