  • 21、Time management can help you excel in your studies, shine at work, and feel less stressed from day to day. But how can you make sure you’re managing your routine effectively?   Following a Daily Schedule, you will totally transform your time management skills.

Identify times when you’re most productive.

【1】 It can help to know when you’re most able to use your time wisely and plan to work during those times. For example, if you find yourself energetic during the mornings, try to get the most of your work done then. During the night, you can wind down and do relaxing things you enjoy.

    【2】

It can help to make a game plan for the day in the morning. As soon as you get up, think about what you need to do and sketch a rough outline of when to do it. Keep work obligations as well as social obligations in mind.

    Schedule breaks and interruptions.

No one can work continuously without a break or an interruption. It’s okay to invite interruptions and distractions into your day on occasion. It can help to schedule these kinds of deviations from necessary tasks. This way, interruptions are less likely to take over and ruin your day. Schedule large breaks or interruptions in addition to tiny deviations (偏差) from your work throughout the day. 【3】   For example, say you’re writing a paper. Allow yourself five minutes to check Facebook per 500 words you write.

Get some work done on the weekends.

Weekends are important for unwinding, relaxing, and having fun, so don’t go overboard. However, it can help to do a little work on the weekend. 【4】

    Stick to a sleep schedule.

If you want to manage your time, a solid sleep schedule is vital. 【5】 To maintain a sleep schedule, go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time each day, even on the weekends. Your body will adapt to your sleep or wake cycle, and you’ll begin to feel tired at your bedtime and energetic in the mornings.

A.Stay in bed all day on the weekends.

B.Eight hours sleep is very important for you.

C.You can also plan tiny interruptions during daily tasks.

D.Spend the first 30 minutes of the morning planning your day.

E.Different people are productive at different points during the day.

F.A good sleep schedule ensures you’ll wake up early in the morning and be ready for the day.

G.Think about the kind of small tasks that pile up over the weekend, making Mondays difficult.

  • 22、Tropical (热带的) birds deep in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest are shrinking and developing longer wings as they adapt to climate change but why is something of a mystery.

Researchers have studied data for 77 tropical bird species over the past 40 years and found that all of them had lost body mass. Some species have been losing nearly 2 percent of their weight per decade.

Birds and mammals of the same species are generally larger at higher latitudes. The leading explanation is that their smaller surface-area-to-volume ratio (比率) allows them to better conserve heat. The opposite would help smaller species in hot climates to cool and could explain why birds are getting smaller as the climate warms, says Vitek Jirinec at the Integral Ecology Research Center in California, who led the analysis.

In line with this, the mean temperature of the birds' habitat today is 1℃ warmer in the wet season and 1.6℃ warmer in the dry season compared with 1966. Weather patterns are also more extreme, with 13 percent more rain falling in the wet season and 15 percent less in the dry season, and the birds lost mass more sharply after extremely dry or wet seasons.

This could suggest that body mass loss is partly a short-term response to changes in their environment rather than entirely down to evolution. For instance, a lack of rainfall could cause a decline in the number of insects that the birds feed on, say the researchers.

But none of this can explain the team's other main finding. Wingspan has become significantly larger in one-third of the bird species over the past 40 years. “Mass is a generally good measure of body condition in birds,” says Jirinec. “If they are simply not getting enough to eat, you would expect them to lose weight. But why would they have more energy to grow their wings?”

【1】Why are some birds larger at higher latitudes?

    A.To preserve heat.

    B.To find food better.

    C.To fight against heat.

    D.To adapt to climate change.

【2】On what condition do birds shrink faster?

    A.When they are hungry.

    B.When there is less rain.

    C.When they lose their habitat.

    D.When they experience extreme seasons.

【3】What remains to be settled by researchers?

A.Why tropical birds develop longer wings.

    B.How Amazon rainforest is decreasing.

C.Why some birds are smaller in hot climates.

D.How temperature of the birds' habitat changes.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

    A.A personal diary.

    B.A travel brochure.

    C.A science magazine.

    D.A science novel.

  • 23、Generally speaking, respect is something that is earned. One earns another' s respect by voluntarily doing things like taking that person's feelings, needs and thoughts into consideration.

Respect seems to be like a boomerang in the sense that you must send it out before it will come back to you. Respect cannot be demanded or forced, though sometimes people mistakenly believe that it can, as discussed below.

Since a baby has no concept of respect, and feels only its own needs when it is first born, it seems the only successful way to teach a child what respect is, is to earn the respect of the child as they slowly grow into a thinking human being.

The way this is done is first of all by attending to the child's natural needs, such as to be fed and nurtured (养育). As the child grows, his needs change. His psychological needs have increasingly advanced. He begins to express his own views, his own preferences, and he has an increasing need for freedom, autonomy and independence. This is when the adults in his life can treat him with increasing respect and thereby earn his respect in return.

It doesn't make sense to think of respecting a baby in the same way that we say we respect an adult. Yet on some level the two concepts are similar. This similarity has to do with our voluntarily helping that person with their needs. In either case, we must first accept the needs. For example, if a baby needs to be fed at three in the morning we don't do it reluctantly if we respect his natural needs; we simply accept that the infant has a natural need to eat at that particular moment. Likewise, if an adolescent or an adult needs to talk, we accept this need and we show respect by listening voluntarily.

In the same way, when we are respected we gain the voluntary cooperation of people. We don't have to use as much of our energy and resources trying to get our needs met.

【1】What is a misunderstanding of respect?

    A.It requires voluntary actions.

    B.It needs much consideration.

C.It is based on people's needs.

    D.It can be obtained forcefully.

【2】Why does the author mention “boomerang” in Paragraph 2?

    A.To introduce a tool.

    B.To clarify a concept.

    C.To present a fact.

    D.To make a prediction.

【3】How can we earn respect from our children?

    A.By teaching them to respect.

    B.By making them independent.

    C.By treating them respectfully.

    D.By talking to them voluntarily.

【4】What does this article mainly talk about?

    A.How we could earn respect.

    B.Why respect is important.

    C.Who we show respect for.

    D.What true respect means.

  • 24、Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are compounds(化合物;复合物) that are set to solve some tough challenges: producing water in the desert, removing greenhouse gases from the air and storing dangerous gases more safely.

The Arizona desert is really dry. Anyone stuck in it without water would die from dehydration (脱水) within three days, unless he had one of Omar Yaghi's next-generation water harvesters, who is a chemist at the University of California, Berkeley. Although daytime wetness is only about 10 percent, this rises to 40 percent at night, which means there's enough water in the atmosphere to support life - if it can be transformed into liquid form.

That's exactly what Yaghi's invention does. It's about the size of a small microwave oven, designed to suck the water from the air at night and turn it into drinking water the next day using only the heat of the sun as its power source. What makes it work is a special material called a MOF, which at normal temperatures attracts water molecules (分子) onto the surface of its internal small holes. Warm it up and get the water, each harvest producing one-third of a cup of pure drinking water. "A device the size of a washing machine could produce enough water for the basic needs of a household," says Yaghi.

These crystalline (结晶的) groups of metals linked by organic molecules can be made into materials with an extremely high absorption ability, attracting specific molecules to their surfaces. In this way, MOFscling toa variety of liquids and gases.

MOFs work thanks to their distinctive structure. In fact, one MOF the size of a sugar cube has so many small holes that they would cover an area as large as six football fields. MOFs are also extremely stable, light and have many different uses: their molecular structure can be varied to attract specific molecules. Adding a small amount of heat or pressure causes the MOF to give what it's holding. More than 70,000 different MOFs have been produced to date for various applications.

【1】Why is the Arizona desert mentioned in the second paragraph?

    A.To introduce water harvesters.

B.To stress the importance of water.

C.To show the severity of its condition.

D.To express the urgent need for water there.

【2】What plays a vital role in water harvesters?

    A.Solar energy.

    B.Water molecules.

    C.Metal-organic frameworks.

    D.MOFs' internal small holes.

【3】Which can explain the phrase "cling to" underlined in paragraph 4?

    A.Give off.

    B.Tum into.

    C.Hold onto.

    D.Break down.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jenny was 18 and she thought she would be strong enough to face going away to college2,000 miles away from home. But by the second day, she was crying on the phone, telling her mom she wanted to come home. It could be because she was the baby of a family of six and the only girl, or her family was particularly close and loving.

Unfortunately, her roommate, Zara, heard her crying. As soon as Jenny hung up the call, Zara started making fun of her. “Oh my! Does baby miss her mommy in Phoenix?” Jenny wiped her tears and asked whether she missed her parents and longed to go home. Zara replied coldly that she had put away such childish things and warned that she shouldn’t behave like a cry baby. Soon everyone in the dorm was calling Jenny “Cry Baby”. The idea of quitting college and running home constantly occurred to Jenny. But somehow, she made it through.

One day, her dad called and asked her to come home for a long weekend. In the end, her father added that she could bring her roommate Zara home and he would soon send two return tickets. Jenny had never told her parents that Zara was far from friendly or supportive. She’d been too ashamed and eager to hide her complete misery(痛苦) from her family.

That evening, Jenny told Zara about her family’s invitation. Zara stared at Jenny, her mouth open. “A ticket for me? Why?” she asked. “I told them you were nice to me…So they wanted to be nice to you...” Jenny explained awkwardly. After a while, Zara said, “I’m coming!”
