二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、To personal trainer Sammy Callari, 13-year-old Parker Seward is more than a client. He’s his “little brother”. Over the past year, the pair have bonded. They play basketball together, share meals and dance to hip-hop like no one’s watching.

The trainer was asked to work with the 13-year-old boy, who has Down syndrome, because his coworker who dealt with the boy was out of town last spring. Callari had never worked with someone with a disability before. He was anxious the first day he met Parker. But Parker’s big smile and cheery introduction immediately put him at ease. He reminded Callari of himself when he was a teenager. Like Parker, Callari has also faced his fair share of challenges over the years.

As a high schooler, Callari described himself as being the weak kid. When it came to sports, he was always overlooked. His dream of playing baseball in college quickly faded away. When he went to college, Callari turned to a new sport. His younger brother trained him to become a boxer. Callari participated in five matches. Out of four of those fights he was the underdog, and he won three times. “I know how it feels,” Callari said. “Society tells you that you can’t do this, you can’t do that.” When it comes to Parker, Callari refuses to accept the word “can’t”.

The friends meet twice a week to train. They bike, box, run and work on their core with push-ups. Parker has a short attention span, so it’s Callari’s job to keep him focused. “If Parker can do it, if he’s having fun, even with his frustration, then people will ask, “Why can’t I do that?” Callari said. “That’s the whole task right now.”

Callari recalls Parker’s mom once thanking him for taking a “chance” on her son. Callari told her he never viewed it that way. Parker may be the student, but Callari says he’s also the one who’s learning.

  • 22、   Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky eating after a teenager developed permanent sight loss after living on a diet of chips and crisps.

Since leaving primary school, the teen had been eating only French fries, white bread, as well as an occasional slice of ham or a sausage.

The adolescent, who cannot be named, had seen his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he was diagnosed with lack of vitamin B12 and put on supplements, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.

Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss. Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: "His diet was only a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on chips, white bread and sometimes slices of ham or sausage, and not really any fruit and vegetables."

The teen explained this as a dislike to certain kinds of food that he really could not tolerate, and so chips and crisps were really the only types of food that he wanted and felt that he could eat.

Dr Aan rechecked the young man's vitamin levels and said "he was low in B12 as well as some other important vitamins and minerals - copper, selenium and vitamin D. He was not over or underweight, but was severely malnutritional from his eating disorder. He had lost minerals from his bone, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age.”

"He had blind spots right in the middle of his vision," said Dr Atari's assistant. "That means he can't drive and would find it really difficult to read, watch TV or recognize faces, but he can walk around on his own because he has got peripheral(周边的)vision.

The condition the young man has is treatable if diagnosed early. Left too long, however, the nerve fibres in the optic nerve(视神经)die and the damage becomes permanent.

Now he has been put on vitamin supplements and sent to a dietitian and a specialist mental health team.

1What can we know about the boy?

A.He didn't see a doctor. B.He can not see anything now.

C.He has a normal body shape. D.He insisted on taking supplements.

2What kind of food does the boy refuse to eat?

    A.Crisps and chips. B.white bread

C.Ham and sausage. D.fruit and vegetables

3What can we learn from Dr Atan's words?

A.Vegetables and fruit are the only source of vitamins.

C.The more vitamins we take, the betterr.

D.Loss of minerals from bone causes blindness.

  • 23、About 30 years ago, an acoustic neuroma (听神经瘤) was found inside my body. The removal of the neuroma caused my temporary balance issues and permanent hearing loss in one ear. Apart from this, I was fine.

Unexpectedly, the neuroma came back years later. It had to be removed again. Otherwise it would threaten the rest of my brain. When I awoke from the second operation, I had stroke-like symptoms. The whole right side of my body almost stopped functioning, and still does.

Overnight my whole identity had changed. I used to effortlessly leap up the stairs two at a time, but now it takes fifteen minutes to struggle. Attempts at the recovery of the old me proved to be fruitless. My family role also shifted from a father to a dependent child, and coupled with my communication problems, this led to increased frustration (沮丧) and anger.

There were concerns too about whether I would ever be accepted again in the wider world. Soon after this I just managed to swim in a pool. A ten-year-old boy I didn’t know came up and asked me if I had been on the water slide yet. As politely as possible, I said no, and we struck up a conversation about it. For the first time a stranger was speaking to me as an equal like before. Though insignificant then, it opened doors to a whole new way of being seen, and seeing myself.

To make sure the neuroma did not reappear, I received radiation treatment for two hours regularly, during which I loved listening to music by Tom Waits, an eccentric (古 怪的) singer most people dislike, but I don’t care. For me, life after brain injury is like Waits’ odd works. Out of failure, ugliness, and horror-the most unpromising raw material-a beautiful diamond can be created that shines out even more brightly because of its dark surroundings.

【1】What happened to the author after his single-sided deafness?

A.He lost the ability to keep balance.

    B.His acoustic neuroma regrew.

C.He underwent two operations in a row.

    D.His vision was accidentally damaged.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The author’s efforts to rebuild his disabled body.

    B.The author’s self-reflection on his cultural identity.

C.The different attitudes of the author’s family to him.

D.The considerable impact of the author’s brain injury.

【3】How did the author find his talk with the boy?

    A.Reasonable.

    B.Engaging.

    C.Life-changing.

    D.In-depth.

【4】What lesson did the author learn from Tom Waits’ music?

A.Music is the universal language of mankind.

B.Suffering often leads to new self-discovery.

C.Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear.

D.Live for yourself, not for the approval of others.

  • 24、   Today is Friday the 13th of the year. Even though the date is known throughout Western culture as one associated with negative things, it’s really just another Friday on the calendar. There is no scientific evidence to suggest this day has an increased chance of bad occurrences compared with other days. But that doesn’t mean scientists haven’t tried to find any.

In Thomas W. Lawsons 1907 novel, Friday, the thirteenth, a businessman takes advantage of the superstition (迷信) and creates a Wall Street panic on the day. The book was the likely inspiration for a number of scientific examinations of stock market returns on Fridays that fell on the 13th day of the month compared with all other Fridays. In 2001, Brian Lucey, a business professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, published his analysis of a few of those studies and found several flaws. The studies had narrow assessments overall, focusing on just a few markets or a single stock exchange. But when he analyzed the data as a whole, Lucey found that internationally, with few exceptions, returns on Friday the 13th were typically just a little higher than returns on other Fridays.

The scientific evidence for cause and effect may not be there, but people may still alter their behavior on Friday the 13th in a way that causes certain things to happen. The way people drive might be different from their usual. But the few studies that have examined traffic accidents haven’t found statistically significant trends to suggest Friday the 13th is more dangerous than other Fridays on the road.

The science is clear: Friday the 13th is a normal day. Yet, people continue to think this is meant to be a bad day. “Psychologically, superstitions arise from the desire to influence external events, decrease anxiety and reduce uncertainty,” said Neil Dagnall, a psychologist at Manchester Metropolitan University. “Besides, I don’t think people know often why they do things.”

1Why is Friday the 13th usually associated with negativity?

A.The date increases possibility of risks. B.Scientists have found enough evidence.

C.Culture has taught people to believe so. D.Things always go bad or worse on the day.

2What did Brian Lucey’s studies focus on?

A.Novels relating to Friday the 13th. B.Written records of Wall Street panic.

C.Analysis of successful business cases. D.Stock market returns on Friday the 13th

3In Paragraph 3, the few studies are mentioned to show that____.

A.human fear of Friday the 13h is not necessary

B.traffic accidents can be avoided on other Fridays

C.people tend to behave strangely on Friday the 13th

D.staying at home is recommended on Friday the 13h

4What does Neil Dagnall think of superstitions?

A.They can lead to endless human desires.

B.They can help people to reduce anxiety.

C.They cause great harm to physical health.

D.They produce a sense of controlling everything
