二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing an animal, would you stop them? Would you at least call the police? Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big issue.

Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals? We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family.

There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me is, “I am only one person. I can’t make a difference.” If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference.

There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously.

Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life !

1Some people won’t stop kids from abusing animals because ______.

A.they are too busy to worry about the animals

B.they don’t take animal abuse seriously

C.they just leave it to the police

D.they are afraid of being laughed at

2Which of the following statements will the author agree with?

A.Dogs have the right to be treated kindly.

B.One person cannot possibly make a difference.

C.Cruelty to animals deserves more attention than global warming.

D.It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse.

3We can learn from the text that ASPCA _____.

A.is another name for the Humane Society

B.provides shelter for both animals and humans

C.deals with such issues as education and global warming

D.aims at protecting animals from being abused

4The main purpose of the text is to ______.

A.criticize those who abuse animals B.call on people to help abused animals

C.show how animals are abused D.explain why people abuse animals

  • 22、   The software,4 Little Trees, was created by Find Solution AI. Founder Viola Lam says it can make the virtual classroom as good as-or better than-the real one.

Students work on tests and homework on the platform. While they study, the AI measures muscle points on their faces through the camera on their computer, and identifies emotions including happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear.

The system also monitors how long students take to answer questions; records their marks and performance history; makes reports on their strengths and weaknesses; and predicts their grades. The program can adapt to each student, targeting knowledge gaps and offering game-style tests designed to make learning fun. Students perform 10% better in exams if they have learned using 4 Little Trees, says Lam.

But technology that monitors children's faces raises concerns about privacy.

Lam says 4 Little Trees records facial muscle data, which is how the AI interprets(诠释) emotional expressions, but it does not video students' faces.

Pascale Fung, director of the Center for AI Research at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology says developers must get permission from parents to collect students' data and then “explain where the data is going to go.”

As the AI improves, Lam hopes to develop applications for businesses, as well as schools, to better understand users' needs and increase engagement (参与) in online meetings. “Where human communication is concerned, AI can help to lead to a better interaction.” she says.

【1】What could be learned about 4 Little Trees?

    A.It improves students' grades.

    B.It makes the classroom unreal.

C.Fun learning is its only advantage.

D.Learning process is simple with it.

【2】What's the parents' main concern about using the 4 Little Trees?

A.Their kids' addiction to the App.

B.Too much money it may cost.

C.What the kids' data will be used for.

D.Whether it's helpful to their kids.

【3】What is Lam likely to do next?

    A.To stop developing applications.

    B.To hold online meetings.

C.To apply the software to businesses.

    D.To improve AI technology.

【4】What's the purpose of the text?

    A.To advertise a software.

    B.To introduce a software.

    C.To voice different opinions.

    D.To call for parents' attention.

  • 23、Ways to Schedule Downtime

To further improve your productivity and keep a better balance between work and life, you should be aware of how important downtime (休息) is. It always enables you to achieve the most ideal work efficiency. 【1】

    Making the time

For those who are not used to taking time off work and having a rest, the best way is to set a schedule for downtime. 【2】 Then set your alarm so that you will be reminded when it’s time to have a break as you can easily ignore the passage of time when you are absorbed in work.

    Treating your downtime strictly

【3】 Without rules you may easily give up downtime and your attention can be distracted by other things, so you are recommended to set rules that prevent you from crossing the boundaries.

Take using computer as an example. 【4】 If you are fond of surfing the Internet or playing games during a break, you should include the use of computer in your schedule, yet there needs to be a line between what to do and what not to do with it, and why and why not to use it.

    Optimizing (优化) your downtime

How long did your last week’s breaks last? Is the duration longer or shorter than the scheduled time? Was your work efficiency affected because you lost control and spent a bit too much time enjoying your breaks? Or did you lack sufficient downtime? Modify your plans based on your situation. Once you find the problem lies in carrying out the plan rather than the plan itself, you’d better open a book on self-discipline.

【5】 Self-discipline takes place here, and it’s essential to keep in mind that downtime isn’t equal to a waste of time. Your continued productivity and happiness really depend on it to a great extent.

    A.Pay attention to the rules.

B.Have your downtime attached to rules.

C.Below are some tips for planning these breaks.

D.Highlight the needed time in black and white.

E.You can measure whether it is necessary in your downtime.

F.You’d better close it after you use it.

G.Following your plan could be difficult at the beginning.

  • 24、Is It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?

Crossing your legs is an extremely, common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. 【1】

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.【2】 However, if you sit for long periods of time, it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.

【3】 Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip (髋部,臀部) width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盘的) bones to turn. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.

Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert.【4】 While this feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb (麻木的) can cause permanent nerve damage.

【5】 Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

    A.It is usually practiced unconsciously.

B.You won’t feel any immediate effects.

C.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain.

D.So when you take a seat, warn yourself of the bad habit.

E.Crossing your legs might cause problems that you are not aware of.

F.So next time you sit down, try to sit with both of your feet on the floor.

G.This pressure can cause numbness of some of the muscles in your foot and leg.
