  • 26、The fast spread of the virus has led most Chinese citizens to wear face masks in public to help reduce infections. The Beijing-based Hanwang Technology Ltd. says it has created a new facial recognition system that is the first to effectively identify people even if they are wearing masks.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition system. The new system is based on the existing technologies developed over the past 10 years.

“When wearing a mask, the recognition rate can reach about 95 percent, which can ensure that most people can be identified,” Hanwang’s vice president, Huang Lei, said. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5 percent. However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough,” Huang said.

Hanwang is now selling two main kinds of products that use the technology. One performs “single channel” recognition and the other is a “multi-channel” recognition, which can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people “within a second”.

Huang said officials can use Hanwang’s technology to compare images with ministry (部门) records on individuals in order to identify and track people as they move about. The system can identify crime suspects (嫌疑人), terrorists or make reports or warnings, he added.

While some citizens have expressed opposition to such tools, more people seem to have accepted the methods as a way to deal with the current health emergency.

So far, Huang says most interest in the new system has come from within China. But he sees the interest likely expanding if the virus continues to spread and the use of face masks increases.

【1】What do we know about the new facial recognition system?

A.It has no relation to the existing tech.

B.It is being used both at home and abroad.

    C.It can record people’s temperature.

D.It can be used for many purposes.

【2】According to the passage, the new system will probably be most helpful for _______.

    A.international companies

    B.colleges and universities

    C.the Ministry of Public Safety

    D.the Ministry of Manpower

【3】What’s most people’s attitude towards the use of the new system?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?

    A.To show China’s technological advances.

B.To introduce a newly developed system.

C.To demonstrate the innovation of China.

    D.To advertise a new tech-based product.

  • 27、The United States seems to have become extremely enthusiastic about competition. The famous Scripps National Spelling Bee — an annual spelling contest — now allows kids who lost in regional competitions but whose parents agree to pay an entry fee along with their own food and accommodation to compete. And while some kids are working for what they call a “spelling career”, others are approaching chess competitions, dance competitions, cooking or other passions (爱好) that previous generations developed somewhat later in life.

I’m disturbed by the phenomenon, which seems to be getting worse and more intense (激烈的).

My teacher always warned us that competition is a destructive quality; that the goal is never to beat anyone else. I think he’ll be cheered by author Peggy Noonan’s idea that a lot of us are running our own races, trying to rise to the occasion and beat some past and limited conception of ourselves by doing something great.

I heartily agree. Instead of paying attention to the accomplishments or possessions of others, we need to focus on our own potential, our own growth and take pleasure in our own particular set of circumstances. The battle for life is not against anyone else but against the darkness inside that tries to bring us down. I wish you only well. Your good doesn’t reduce mine. Your bad gives me no pleasure.

Ms. Noonan also suggests that “you’re running your own race alongside others running theirs, and in the same direction. You’re doing something great together.” If we stop worrying about what our neighbor is earning or driving, the size of his house, the success of his marriage, the accomplishments of his children, we can sit back and enjoy our own lives. And if we all focus on what we each can achieve, regardless of anyone else, we have a chance of working as one, of actually being united.

Competition divides us. There’re winners and losers. But that’s a very limited picture of reality. It may apply to spelling bees and soccer matches and even in some college classes, but life isn’t about triumphing (战胜) over someone else; it’s about triumphing over ourselves. The only acceptable competition is one where we encourage each other to be the best human being possible, and that’s the only game where “everyone’s a winner”.

【1】What does the author worry about?

    A.Youth competition lacks diversity.

    B.Youth competition is expensive.

    C.Youth competition lacks fairness.

    D.Youth competition is fierce.

【2】What should we do in the battle for life according to the author?

    A.Know our competitors well.

B.Get rid of the bad things inside us.

C.Learn from others’ successes and failures.

    D.Leave everything to chance.

【3】How does Peggy Noonan describe the way people live their lives?

A.No one goes in the same direction as anyone else.

    B.One man’s loss is another man’s gain.

C.People follow parallel paths to each other.

D.People take turns to lead the race.

【4】Which could be the best title for the passage?

A.Competition Is a Good Thing, But Not to the Youth

B.Through Competition, We Become Better Ourselves

C.Your Real Competition Is With Yourself

D.Everyone Is a Winner in the Battle for Life

  • 29、If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on   the research that has no merit.

Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense?

One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space

Administration (NASA) missions ( 任务), and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.

Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many spinoff ( 衍生的) technologies it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.

There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as spinoff technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the terrible aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.

【1】How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?

    A.By offering analyses.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By giving some examples.

    D.By presenting research findings.

【2】The function of Jaws of Life is to .

    A.save people from traffic accidents

B.do experiments on the space shuttle

C.keep houses warm and energy efficient

D.separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets

    【3】In the author’s opinion, space exploration .

    A.has changed our life completely

B.costs too much of our time

    C.benefits us in many ways

D.has nothing to do with us

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Benefits of Space Exploration

B.Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost?

C.How to Make Space Exploration Affordable

D.Missions of the NASA Space Shuttle Program
