26、British doctors are to launch a maijor clinical trial to investigate whether a common anti-depression drug could be a cheap and effective treatment for the destructive condition motor neurone (运动神经元) disease.
The trial, which is due to start in January, will follow more than 200 patients with motor neurone disease over 18 months to see if those given daily lithium pills live longer. Lithium is already licensed for treating depression and other mental disorders, and is extremely cheap, costing just 48p for a packet of 20 pills.
The£lm trial follows the publication in February of a small study by Italian researchers which suggested that lithium could slow the progression of the disease dramatically. The study sparked a surge of interest in the drug among online patient groups, and some doctors now offer lithium “off-label”, despite widespread uncertainty as to whether it works.
Nigel Leigh, director of the motor neurone disease care centre at King’s College London, who will lead the trial, said: “It is our responsibility and duty to carry out this trial because we have to consider every lead seriously, and where there is real uncertainty, resolve it swiftly. The results of the Italian trial are too dramatic to ignore.”
Motor neurone disease destroys nerves in the brain that control movement, leaving patients locked in a failing body. There is currently no cure and half die within 14 months of being diagnosed. In the UK, there are about 5,000 people with the condition. Stephen Hawking, the 66-year-old Cambridge physicist, was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease 45 years ago. He is now almost completely paralysed, although, as with most other patients, his mind remains active.
Doctors are unsure precisely how lithium works, but its effectiveness as an anti-depression treatment is thought to be linked to its ability to slow down electrical activity in brain cells.
Doctors are now recruiting patients who experienced their first symptoms of the disease with:in the past six months to three years. Results from the trial are expected within two years. It will be considered a success if patients who are given the drug live 20% longer than those who receive a placebo (安慰剂). “It would be very nice if we show lithium arrests the disease but we’re not expecting that. We’re hoping for a three- to six-month increase in lifespan over the 18-month trial,” said Leigh.
If the drug is effective, it could be given to thousands of patients immediately. But doctors advised patients against taking it until the trial was over. Taken unsupervised, it could put them at risk of side effects including confusion, kidney failure and damage to the thyroid gland (甲状腺), they warned.

A.noteworthy
B.unreliable
C.doubtless

27、 Folk tales have saddled (使承担) the moon with major responsibilities: moods, increases in crime and even mental disorders are blamed on the moon. But could the “lunar effect” disturb sleep?
Scientists have long understood that human activity is affected by light, including sunlight, moonlight and artificial light. But a recent study suggests our ability to sleep is clearly affected by the lunar cycle, even when considering artificial sources of light.
Using wrist monitors, researchers tracked sleep patterns in 98 individuals living in three local communities in Argentina over the course of two months. One rural community had no electricity access, a second rural community had limited access to electricity, while a third community was located in an urban setting and had full access to electricity.
In each community, the peak(峰值) of participants sleeping less and staying up later occurred three to five days before full moon nights, and the opposite occurred on the nights before the new moon, the authors found.
Unsurprisingly, data showed the “'lunar phase effect” on sleep appeared to be stronger the more limited access to electricity was.
“The result strongly suggests that human sleep is synchronized (同步) with lunar phase,” the researchers wrote in the journal ScienceAdoances.
De la Iglesia added: “We humans tend to believe that we managed to control nature, and the use of artificial light is a great example of that. But it turns out that there are some forces of nature that we cannot get away from.”
Derk-Jan Dijk, a professor of sleep and physiology and the director of a sleep research centre at the University of Surrey, described the study as exciting but noted that the researchers had not deal with internal influences such as body clocks that could affect sleep patterns.

28、A Trip Along the Three Gorges
In August 1996, Peter Hessler, a young American teacher of English, arrived in the town of Fuling on the Yangtze River. He and a colleague were to spend two years there teaching English at a teacher training college. They were the only foreigners in the town. The first semester finished at the end of January and they had four weeks off for the Spring Festival. They could go anywhere they wished. They decided to take a boat downstream.
We decided to buy tickets for the Jiangyou boat. Our colleagues said, "You shouldn't go on those ships. They are very crowded. They are mainly for goods and people trading along the river. They don't stop at the temples and there won't be any other foreigners." That sounded fine to me. We just had to show our passports and they let us get on the boat.
We left the docks on a beautiful afternoon. The sun was shining brightly as we sailed downstream through a hilly region. Men rode bamboo rafts along the river's edge and coal boats went past. As the sun set we docked at Fengdu. We could see the sun setting behind the white pagoda. It was beautiful.
We slept through the first gorge, which is called the Qutang Gorge. The gorge narrows to 350 feet as the river rushes through the two-mile-high mountains. "Oh, well," my friend said, "at least we have two more left."
At Wushan we made a detour up the Daning River to see some of the smaller gorges. The next day we went through the big gorges on the Yangtze River. It was a lovely morning as we went through the Wu Gorge. We passed the Xiang River, home of Qu Yuan, the 3rd century BC poet. There was so much history along the Yangtze River. Every rock looked like a person or animal, every stream that joined the great river carried its legends, every hill was heavy with the past.
As we came out of the third gorge, the Xiling Gorge, we sailed into the construction site of the dam. All the passengers came on deck. We took pictures and pointed at the site, but we weren't allowed to get off the boat. The Chinese flag was blowing in the wind. On a distant mountain was a sign in 20-foot characters. "Build the Three Gorges Dam, Exploit the Yangtze River," it said.

He was forcing me to walk towards the back of an auto repair shop and he just kept saying“Be quiet.”
My mind froze with fear. Then I heard my great-grandmother’s voice in my head. She was saying“Come on now. I know you are stronger than that!” She was the rock in our family until she died four years ago.
I have never had any self-defense(自卫)training, but I went for it--I let out a loud scream as I kicked my leg back into his shin(胫骨)!He let go of me(放开我) and I ran off. When I looked back to see if he was running after me,I saw he was running in the opposite direction. Then I ran like crazy to a nearby store.
I asked the girl at the counter for the phone and called my mom. She picked me up five minutes later and I explained what happened through sobs(抽泣).“I am calling the police!” She exclaimed. When we got home, two officers were waiting for us and I told them what had happened.
After my experience,I was afraid to do anything. Things slowly got better, but I still don’t like anyone going near my neck.

In July of 2021, Julia, a curious 5-year-old little girl, followed her dad into the unforgiving and dangerous Siberian wilderness near their home located in the remote region of the Sakha Republic.
At first, Julia's mother May believed Julia had gone with her father to visit her grandma. Unfortunately, the area they lived in was so remote that it did not have cell phone service, so she could not call her husband to confirm. It was only after her husband returned two days later that they realized Julia had made her way into the thick forest unnoticed and became lost.
Panicked and concerned, Julia's family instantly called for help. It wasn't long before hundreds of people showed up to seek the girl. Rescue workers, police, firefighters, and volunteers searched like crazy for the girl. They also got the aid of six search dogs, and a helicopter with technology to look for Julia in the dark but with no luck after a day's search.
Julia's family feared the worst, primarily since the area was well known for wild animals such as wolves and bears. Not to mention the fact that it was Siberia, which meant it got bitterly cold at night. Many of the rescuers were forced to face the reality that the girl was most likely dead. They knew a small child wouldn't last long out in the cold with little to protect her.
Early in the next morning, the police officer David who was in charge of the search hurried to Julia's house to ask May for more details. It suddenly occurred to May that a neighborhood dog, which Julia named Nadia, would probably follow her into the forest.
"Julia spares her food and feeds Nadia every day and gradually Julia has developed a close bond with the wandering dog. They are attached to each other and always inseparable. They must be together now, aren't they?" May looked into David's eyes and asked eagerly.
