二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Sun bears usually live alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves when not looking for a mate. They spend their days in scarce of fruit, nuts, birds and insects in Southeast Asia's tropical forests.

Although sun bears mostly live alone, scientists recently discover they have developed a surprising social skill. They can make some facial expressions by mimicking other bears as a form of communication. Researchers studied 22 sun bears during natural social play at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center in Malaysia. Usually, this kind of skill is found in humans, gorillas(大猩猩), some monkeys and even pet dogs. But until now, only humans and gorillas show the ability to exactly copy complex faces. The study found that sun bears, however, are just as good at it as humans and gorillas. This surprised researchers; not only do sun bears usually live alone, they also are not closely related to humans.

Sun bears have a black coat and a white or golden color on their mid-section. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. Sun bears are the smallest of the world's eight bear species, and can grow to be up to 1.4 meters in height and 65 kilograms in weight. Although they live alone in the wild, the bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions and behaviors such as hitting and hitting.

Decry Taylor is a doctoral student in psychology at the University of Portsmouth in England. He is one of the writers of the study, which was published in Scientific Reports. Taylor said, "It seems that some forms of communication are much more widely shared among mammals than we previously thought. Let remains uncertain what messages the bears were sending to one another." But the facial copying might be a signal that they are ready to move from gentle to rougher play, Taylor suggested.

1What does the underlined word "mimicking" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Attacking. B.Copying.

    C.Teaching. D.Escaping.

2What made researches surprised after they conducted the study?

A.Sun bears are closely related to humans.

B.Gorillas live alone in the wild just like sun bears.

C.Gorillas have the ability to copy complex faces.

D.Sun bears are able to copy facial expressions.

3What can we know about sun bears from the passage?

A.They are the smallest mammals in the world.

B.They never communicate with each other.

C.They live in trees and feed on plants and animals.

D.They often hit and bite each other fiercely.

4Which of the following may Decry Taylor agree with?

A.Mammals' communication forms need to be further explored.

B.What messages sun bears send to each other is certain.

C.Sun bears send messages mainly by copying other bears.

D.Sun bears prefer to play roughly with each other.

  • 27、A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.

The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna (天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration (持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation.

While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a "future development".

Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement (执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

【1】Why is the roadside system used according to Paragraph 1?

A.To send out cellphone signals to drivers.

B.To detect drivers' illegal use of cellphone.

C.To monitor people's use of phones while driving.

D.To warm people against using pones while driving.

【2】How does the detector of the roadside system work?

A.It measures the length of the phone.

B.It warns drivers with a phone in hand.

C.It picks up radio waves from handsets.

D.It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.

【3】What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign?

    A.Swift to Bluetooth while driving.

B.Have a close watch of road signs.

C.Avoid being picked up by detectors.

    D.Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.

【4】What will the county council probably do in the future?

A.Share the devices with the police.

    B.Make the system more advanced.

C.Replace the police with the new system.

D.Take steps to settle road safety problems.

  • 29、At Englands University of Plymouth, Professor Eduardo Miranda has been programming pairs of robots to compose music. Miranda's robots have simple “ vocal cords”(声带)and are programmed to sing and to listen to each other. The robots' unique warbling sounds (颤音) do not perfectly match the human voice, but each machine is exactly sharing music with the other in a new and unique way.

Each robot is equipped with speakers, software that mimics the human voice, a mouth that opens as it “sings,” a microphone for ears, and a camera for eyes. The robots also move. Miranda hopes that by studying his robot vocalists, he can discover something about how and why humans create, perform, and listen to music.

When the robots sing, first one robot makes six random sounds. Its partner responds with more sounds. The first robot analyzes the sounds to see if their sequences (序列)) are similar. If they are, it nods its head and commits the sounds to memory, and the second robot notices and “memorizes” the musical sequence, too. If the first robot thinks the sounds are too different, it shakes its head and both robots ignore the sounds. Then the process continues.

Miranda set up an experiment in which he left the two robots alone in his study for two weeks. When he returned, his little warblers had, by imitating each other, not only shared notes but combined them. The product of their cooperation was far from symphonic, but the robots had begun to combine the notes into their own self-developed “songs”.

With the help of his warbling robots, one of Miranda's goals is to create music that no human would ever compose. Miranda believes the robots are ideal for this purpose because they would not be influenced by any existing musical styles or rules.

【1】Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “mimics” in Paragraph 2?

    A.Substitutes.

    B.Interrupts.

    C.Controls.

    D.Copies.

    A.They interacted with each other.

    B.They ignored the unique sound.

C.They learned to sing better than humans.

D.They committed random sounds to memory.

【3】What does Miranda want his robots to do?

A.Sing as well as humans do.

    B.Create new styles of music.

    C.Memorize a variety of music.

    D.Promote traditional musical forms.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Future robots.

    B.Special songs.

    C.Music by robots.

    D.Experiments by Miranda.

But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.
