24、Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photographs, films, radio and television. Why read a description of something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?
Photography was certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书) , for example, is always better when it has good illustrations. But we also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent feature film. Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.

【3】What are the advantages of novel over a feature film?
A. There are more interesting subjects in novels.
B. We do not hear any music in a novel.
C. Novels always explain what is happening.
D. Novels make us use our imagination.
【4】What does the author think about reading?
A. It is a wonderful invention.
B. It is an important part of our lives.
C. It requires no practices.
D. It is not as important as television.
25、Walt Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even sold his pictures to his neighbors. In 1918, Disney joined the Red Cross and drove an ambulance (救护车) in France during World War I (第一次世界大战). After the war ended, Disney started making short cartoons in Kansas City, but soon he ran out of all his money. He decided to get a job in Hollywood. He went to California with only $20 with him.
It took a while, but Disney began to enjoy success with his cartoons. He created Mickey Mouse, the most famous cartoon character ever. Then in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out and it was a huge success. During the following years, Disney made many more movies that we still watch today.
In the 1940s, Disney had an idea of building a fun park for families and the idea grew bigger and bigger. Years after Disney first had the idea, the first Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California. At that time, the ticket cost a dollar. By 1965, fifty million visitors had visited Disneyland.
Disney died in 1966, five years before the opening of his next dream park, Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
If you ever visit one of the Disney parks, or go to a Disney movie, think of the man who started it all.

26、 When I was a kid, my dad often worked outside in the winter, removing snow, or perhaps chopping some wood. With his coat thrown aside, he was just wearing a shirt, a cap, and a pair of gloves.
It could be -20°C, “Aren't you cold, Dad?” I'd wondered, “No.” Dad would reply, “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold.” Many times I wondered whether my father was extremely tough or a little bit foolish.
One time when I was about five or so, I went ice fishing with Dad. It was a bright, clear day—and bitterly cold.
After we'd been out on the ice for a little while, my feet started getting cold.“Daddy, my feet are cold.” I said.
“Yeah, it's cold out here today.” He replied, “Tell you what, just walk around in the snow!”
I was just a little girl at the time but I remember thinking, “How in the world will walking around in the snow make my feet warm? Dad must be out of mind.”
But there's no better way. So I had to make circles in the snow. Then I made squares. Pretty soon I found it so much fun to make patterns in the snow. Gradually, I did feel warm. I know it because I do it, too.
Now, I know from my personal experience how my dad was able to take his coat off and work outside in the winter. I know it because I do, too.
“Aren't you cold?” my husband asked one winter day.“No.” I replied, “I’m not cold—working too hard to be cold.” I hope that my husband will consider me both tough and smart. But I guess quite a bit of the time he thinks I'm foolish.
If Dad could know that, I'm sure he will smile when I take my coat off while I'm working outside in the winter.
No one can resist(抵抗)the force of nature, but don't hold back because human will and wisdom are stronger.

【2】What did the writer think of her father's advice at first?
A.Popular and wise.
B.Crazy and difficult.
C.Simple and effective.
D.Stupid and useless.

A.The writer didn't understand her father's explanation until that day.
B.The writer's husband knew her story and thought she was tough and smart.
C.The writer wrote the passage to remember her father.
D.When the writer made circles in the snow, she felt warm and thought it interesting.
27、According to a research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact.
When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, it has already fed thousands of people in her city.
How does it work? Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
Pretty cool, right? It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.
Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.
