  • 21、   We often spend a lot of time complaining about the things we don’t have or thinking about the things we want to have in future, and forget those things we have now. 1 One of the best ways is to make a list of all the things you are grateful for.

    Having a comfortable family

Even if you have a difficult relationship with your parents, you should be thankful to your family. Whether you come from a small quiet family or a big noisy one, remember that these people truly love you, even if they don’t show it.2.

Having a good relationship with friends

3, be grateful for having them, even if you have only one. Personally I can say that one good friend is always better than a few so-called friends. Be thankful to your friends and try to remind them how much you care as often as possible.

    4.

We often forget our health until we are sick. Whether you have a headache or something more serious, you can’t accomplish your tasks and you can’t focus on anything else. If you are a healthy personbe thankful for it each day, and make sure you lead a healthy lifestyle.

Valuing the past failures and mistakes

Every person should be grateful for their failures and mistakes. Every failed relationship or missed job chance makes you a better person. 5 . Just don’t dwell(细想)too much on your past.

    A. Keeping your body in a good situation

    B. No matter how many friends you have

    C. Realizing the condition of your sickness

    D. They will always be ready to help you in any situation

    E. When your friends point out your past failures and mistakes

    F. If you fell down, you should remind yourself that you are actually a happy person

    G. Sometimes mistakes are great since they help you become better if you learn from them

  • 22、In the hot summer, many people rely on ice cream to keep them going. Among the dizzying array of ice cream, there’s always a place for ice cream cones. When you enjoy the ice cream cone, have you ever thought about the seemingly humble cone?

The ice cream cone is never the star of the show. Its role is clear: Keep the scoop upright, don’t leak and don’t upstage the main player, the ice cream. But being that supporting takes work, which is why David George believes that the cone deserves more respect.

George is the third-generation president of Joy Baking Group, the largest manufacturer of ice cream cones in North America. You may not know Joy by name, but you’ve probably tasted its cones. As the kingdom of ice cream has expanded, the cone world has only grown smaller. Joy has concerned the cone market by betting on a basic premise: When it comes to the cone, people don’t want creativity. They want familiarity.

Joy’s flagship factory in western Pennsylvania produced 15 to 20 million cones a day during its busiest season. They include squeaky cake cones; cookie-like sugar cones; and caramel-scented waffle cones. These are cones designed to taste like childhood summers. They’re as comforting as a slice of pie, as delightful as cotton candy.

“The thing about ice cream is that for nearly everyone, it is so tied to nostalgia,” said Susan Sorrento, the owner of Moreno’s, an ice cream shop in the Washington area. “It is what you remember about your grandma taking you out.” For many Americans, those moments are linked to Joy cones. Even if another worthy competitor arises, “It doesn’t matter,” she said, “because it is competing with a memory.”

【1】Why does George believe the cone should be respected?

    A.It doesn’t often change tastes.

    B.It does important work quietly.

C.It is as delightful as cotton candy.

D.It has its market expanded gradually.

【2】Which of the following best describes Joy Baking Group?

    A.It pursues its business philosophy.

    B.It has the fourth-generation president.

C.It produces 15 to 20 million cones daily.

D.It is the largest cone maker in South America.

【3】What does the underlined word “nostalgia” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.An eagerness for freedom.

B.A way of relaxation after work.

C.A period of happy old times.

    D.An expectation for good results.

【4】What does Sorrento think of the future of ice cream cones?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Dull.

    C.Challenging.

    D.Promising.

  • 23、   Children exposed to “safe” levels of air pollution in the womb(子宫) develop brain damage that damages their concentration, a study has shown.

The research is the first too link common pollutants such as nitrogen() dioxide and soot(油烟) to changes in the brains of unborn babies that mean they may struggle to focus at school in later life. The findings suggest that even comparatively clean city air could lead to worse academic performance and an increased risk of mental health problems such as addition or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(缺陷多动障碍).

In recent years scientists have found that children who grow up surrounded by air pollution are more likely to have a broad range of “neuro(神经)developmental” difficulties, including autism and various kinds of cognitive(认知) damage. However, only a handful of studies have looked at the ways in which the poisonous gases and microscopic particles(微粒) that mothers and young children take in affect the brain during critical stages of its growth.

A group led by Monica Guxens, of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, found that exposure to air pollution before birth appeared to have slowed the development of several brain regions that play an important role in people's capacity for selfdenial and sustained effort. This lack of inhibition could in turn cause “cognitive delays” when the children get older, the scientists argue in Biological Psychiatry.

“We need this function in our daily life” Dr. Guxens said. “It controls our impulses(冲动) and our selective attention. Children need it to learn and for making decisions in later life. We're interested to see what will happen: is there going to be an impact on their academic work, are there going to be clinical implications? It might be that this will lead to problems later.”

The results were drawn from MRI scans of 873 children between the ages of six and ten in Rotterdam. Even though 99.5 percent of their mothers had lived with nanoparticle pollution levels well below EU legal limits while they were pregnant the pollution still appeared to have taken its toll(伤亡人数).

Children who had been exposed to more pollution in the womb did worse on a test of their ability to block out irrelevant stimuli(刺激). They also had thinner outer layers in the precuneus(楔前叶) and the rostral middle frontal regions of their brains, both of which are involved in cognitive inhibition, which refers to the mind's ability to tune out stimuli that are irrelevant to the task at hand or to the mind's current state.

Experiments on animals show that socalled fine particles are able to pass through the placenta and affect the brain of the fetus(胎儿). Dr Guxens said there were probably no such thing as a safe concentration of air pollution.

1What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Children's brain growth slowed by “safe” pollution.

B.The safe level of air pollution for pregnant women.

C.Factors leading to children's poor academic performance.

D.The problems children have when surrounded by pollution.

2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?

A.Academic work. B.The lack of inhibition.

C.Selective attention. D.The ability for selfdial and sustained effort.

3From the last three paragraphs we can infer ________

A.air pollution has claimed many lives of kids

B.people can't focus on air pollution enough

C.the majority of pregnant women are free from air pollution

D.kids exposed to more pollution have poorer cognitive inhibition

  • 24、The sight of a mosquito can mean trouble to people in many parts of the world. The bite of the mosquito can be deadly. The insects carry serious diseases like malaria (疟疾). It is estimated that almost 630,000 people died from malaria and malariarelated causes in 2012, and most of these cases were in African countries.

In the United States, a group of California scientists are working to develop a more effective and less costly substance (物质) to protect people from mosquitoes. The researchers are investigating the sense of smell in mosquitoes. They found the insects use the same receptor for identifying carbon dioxide in human breath as they do for the smell of our skin. Anandasankar Ray, who is leading the investigation, says scientists tested more than a million chemical compounds (化合物) until they found a substance called Ethyl Pyruvate. He says Ethyl Pyruvate makes the mosquitoes' receptors inactive. “When we apply Ethyl Pyruvate to a human arm and offer it to hungry mosquitoes in a cage, very few of the mosquitoes are attracted to the human arm because only a few of them are able to smell it out,” said Ray.

Genevieve Tauxe, a member of the research team, says it was not easy to find the neurons (神经元) of noble cells that recognize both the smell of human breath and skin. “With the device used to examine the mosquito, we are able to insert a very small electrode (电极) into the part of the mosquito's nose, where its smelling neurons are and where the smell is happening,” said Tauxe.

Anandasankar Ray says a product based on Ethyl Pyruvate may cost less to produce than DEFT, the most effective chemical treatment now in use. He says DEFT is too costly for most people who live in areas affected by malaria.

“Perhaps by finding smells that can attack other target receptors, we will be able to improve upon DEFT and finally have the next generation of insect behaviour control products,” said Ray.ytytzygx.

【1】The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means ________.

    A. a substance that protects people from mosquitoes

    B. a sense organ that reacts to changes

    A. kill the mosquitoes' smelling neurons

    B. cause the mosquitoes to lose their senses of smell

    C. result in the inactiveness of the mosquitoes' receptors

    D. make the mosquitoes uninterested in human breath and skin smell

【3】This passage most probably appears in ________.

    A. a textbook of medical schools

    B. a collection of doctors' essays

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Summary

Fishing is probably the world’s most popular sport. People spend many dollars each year on items like boats and four-wheel-drive vehicles. In addition, they spend money on fishing equipment, bait, fuel and boat repairs. And you can see that fishing can be an expensive pastime. Fishing lovers believe that their hobby is worth it. Others say that fishing is spoiling the environment and that it is a cruel hobby.

Supporters of fishing say that it is a nice hobby. Firstly, of the millions of people who fish for fun, most only catch enough fish to feed their families. They catch fish that are found in large numbers, so there is little danger to the species.

Secondly, recreational fishermen contribute to the economy. They spend money on equipment and other items, and they also spend it indirectly by paying taxes on their equipment and fuel. Those who travel to fishing spots pay for accommodation and airfares. This money keeps people in work and provides new jobs each year.

Thirdly, fishing is relaxing and fun so it lessens stress. Instead of turning to drugs or alcohol, it is far better to go fishing. People who are relaxed are generally healthier and much nicer to be near –except for the smell of the bait!

Those who disagree with fishing say that there are too many fish thoughtlessly taken from rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. This could lead to the dying out of some species. Modern cars and boats mean that people can fish in remote areas of the world, so no place is safe from greedy fishermen who take both males and females, leaving few fish to produce young.

Those against fishing also say that it is a blood sport, which means that an animal must die so that a human can have fun. Many of the fish caught for sport are not suitable for eating, so they are thrown away. Once hooked, fish have no chance of escape.
