21、A small implant connected to electrodes (电极) inserted into the skull bone (颅骨) is providing huge relief to younger patients living with Parkinson’s disease, such that it could allow sufferers to pick up fine motor skills like playing golf again.
While it isn’t a cure, the implant is a treatment that makes living with Parkinson’s ten times more bearable. “Before the operation I went for a walk on Boxing Day with my wife and I got 182m from the actual car,” Tony Howells, who received this implant in 2019, said. “Then after the operation, which was 12 months later, I went on Boxing Day again and we went as far as 4km and could have gone further. It was amazing,” he added.
25 patients like Howells have been selected to participate in the trial at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, England, which wil1 conclude next year. Most of them are older than 50, but those who may be old enough to begin losing memories are too old for the operation.
The operation involves inserting the tiny battery within the skull bone and running electrodes down into the center of the brain in the subthalamic nuclei (底丘脑核). It then delivers delicate electrical impulses (脉冲) to help stimulate nerve cells to work correctly, thereby restoring some of the normal muscular function which Parkinson’s disturbs.
Previous implanting operations involved batteries implanted into a patient’s chest. This new method takes just three hours, and could be available for as many as 10% of all Parkinson’s patients.
“You can’t understand how upsetting Parkinson’s is until it happens to you. Just doing your shoelaces up is a major operation... it affects your everyday life no end,” said Howells, who is even able to play fine-tuned sports-including golf-again.

22、 We always pay much attention to what we eat, but it turns out the timing of our meals is also important.
Studies have shown that when calories get consumed later at night, the body tends to store them as fat rather than burn them as energy. And some studies done with animals found that food is processed by the body in different ways depending on what time of day it's consumed. This might be because of physical activity, changes in body temperature, biochemical reactions and absorption and digestion of food.
If you're trying to lose weight, you may want to consider eating dinner very early or making a late lunch your last meal of the day.
In a 2018 study, researchers found that meal timing has an effect on human metabolism. They studied a small group of people carrying extra weight and found that those who ate their last meal by mid-afternoon had reduced daily hunger swings and increased fat burning at night.
“Eating only during a much smaller window of time than people are typically used to may help with weight loss, specifically by increasing our body's ability to burn fat and protein,” said Courtney Peterson, Ph. D. “We found that eating between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. followed by an 18-hour daily fast burned more fat and kept appetite levels more even throughout the day, in comparison to eating between 8 a.m. and 12 hours later, which is average for Americans.”
Peterson's research found that eating in a shorter daily window — 8 hours versus 12 hours — and an earlier time both affect metabolism.
Similarly, a 10-week study of “time-restricted feeding” looked at what happened to body fat when people limited their meals to a shorter window of time. Researchers found that people who ate breakfast 90 minutes later than usual and ate dinner 90 minutes earlier than usual lost more than twice as much body fat on average as those in the control group, who ate their meals as they normally would.
Although this study is small, it has provided us with invaluable insight into how slight changes to our meal times can have benefits to our bodies.

23、Just like happiness and sadness, anxiety is part of everyone's lived experience—but it's not always tolerated as such. “People often spend too much time and effort trying to rid anxiety,” says Dr Joel Minden, a clinical psychologist. “I encourage them to remember that anxiety is a normal emotional response.”
If you try to banish anxiety, all you're doing is putting it more at the forefront of your mind. But if you accept anxiety as part of life, you can learn to relate to it with self-pity or even with humour. This is a cornerstone of acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT), which has been gaining clinical validation, including by the American Psychological Association. ACT guides people to see their unpleasant emotions as just feelings and to accept that parts o£ life are hard. Sufferers are encouraged to begin a dialogue with anxious thoughts, examining their causes while also keeping in mind their personal goals and values.
This way of relating to anxiety has been a powerful strategy for John Bateman, the 52- year-old host of the podcast Our Anxiety Stories. When negative thoughts arise, he acknowledges them but doesn't let them drive his decisions. Over the years, Bateman has noticed that if he submits to his thoughts, they don't go away but dramatically increase. But if he recognizes them for what they are, just a passing thought and not a fact that needs to be acted on, they gradually go away.
Learning to live with anxiety is an individual process and one that requires trial and error to get just right. While acceptance is the first and most important step to take, some lifestyle changes have been proven to take the edge off, as well. Since tiredness, increased tension and stress leave us much easier to fall into anxiety, a well-balanced diet, sufficient rest and, especially, regular exercise can help us manage it better.
【1】What may Dr Joel Minden agree about anxiety?
A.It goes hand in hand with joy.

A.Concentrating on the process.

24、 Toni Morrison, an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature, was admired as the country's greatest living writer and died at age 88. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon, and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed with skin color.
She published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970.Eighteen years later, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to be born into slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race.” Her novels discussed America’s past, focusing on black history and the effects of racism on individuals.
She was born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931.Her father worked in a steel factory, and her mother was a maid.
