二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、While saying no can be empowering and liberating to some, for others it can be frightening or uncomfortable. We feel that we must go along with things we honestly do not want to do in order to be socially accepted. However, there are benefits to the word “no”. Saying no can create more mental health stability and build your self-esteem and confidence. Saying no may be a difficult thing to do, but there are ways to make the process a bit more acceptable and effective.

The sandwich method, an approach that involves sandwiching something that individuals may consider negative between two positives, is helpful for you to feel natural and authentic to say no. Tell the person something positive followed by the no and end with something supportive or positive. For example. “Thank you for inviting me. I really appreciate you including me and being thoughtful; however, I won’t be able to make it. I would still really enjoy meeting up with you. I’ll look at my schedule for some dates I’m available, so we can spend some time together.”

It’s also important to keep in mind that saying no to something but giving other options that better fit your needs can also be an effective way to use the power of no. Remember that your needs are important and your decisions can directly affect your time and energy.

We all have various roles in our work, parenting, and social obligations. These roles can challenge our abilities to set boundaries. Learning about yourself and finding your inner power is important to your health and well-being. Consider setting boundaries around goals you have for yourself. For example, if one of your goals is to create better balance between work and life, you may say no to a call or meeting outside your normal working hours.

Using some of the techniques outlined above, you may not find it a big deal to say no.

【1】What is an advantage of saying no?

    A.You might become more powerful.

B.You will be more socially accepted.

C.You are likely to feel self-confident.

D.You can stabilize your physical health.

【2】Which of the following agrees with the sandwich method?

    A.To follow 2 praises with a criticism.

B.To make a refusal between 2 layers of praise.

C.To state something negative and give 2 proposals.

D.To introduce an idea, give examples and draw a conclusion.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to saying no?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Objective.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Opposed.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.The Art of Saying No

    B.The Skill of Communication

    C.The Importance of Saying No

    D.The Concept of Sandwich Method

  • 27、If you think of the jobs robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. It's easy to imagine robot cleaners and factory workers, but some jobs need human connection and creativity. But are we underestimating what robots can do? In some cases, they already perform better than doctors at diagnosing illness. Also, some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?

British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He predicts robots will do the main job of transferring information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students' faces, movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will adapt the information to each student. It's not a popular opinion and its unlikely robots will-ever have the ability to really connect with humans like another human can.

One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren't enough teachers and 9~16 percent of children under the age of 14 don't go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere and won't get stressed, or tired, or move somewhere for an easier, higher-paid job.

Those negative aspects of teaching are something everyone agrees on. Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult job and they feel overworked. Perhaps the question is not "Will robots replace teachers?" but "How can robots help teachers?" Office workers can use software to do things like organizing and answering emails, arranging meetings and updating calendars. Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

  • 28、Now, I’ve talked much about education. I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn. I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV .I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world-and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.

I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.

And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.

That's okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. J.K. Rowling's who wrote Harry Potter- her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed.”

And even when you're struggling, even when you're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, don't ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

    1The passage is probably   .

    A. a speech   B. a report

    C. news   D. a story

2The underlined expression “stay on track” in the first paragraph means   .

    A. run after someone   B. act correctly

    C. travel by train   D. race on the playground

3Which of the following statements does the passage tell us?

    A. Well begun, half done.   B. Never too late to mend.

    C. Spare the rod, spoil the child.   D. Achievements rely on people themselves.

4The last two paragraphs tell people that .

    A. being refused is vital.

    B. being discouraged is necessary.

    C. love of the country is the most important.

    D. failure is the mother of success.

  • 29、Anyone who deals with teens knows how tough the adolescent years can be. Teens are always known to do wild and dangerous things. 【1】. But now scientists have studied the physical development of the brain in more detail, leading to a new theory of why teens act the way they do.

Scientists discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are not fully developed. Now, scientists have found our brains continue to change till age 25. 【2】.

The studies confirm teens are more likely to take risks and behave in extreme ways. One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens think of danger and reward. When teenagers think about rewards, their brains produce more chemicals that create pleasure than adult brains would. 【3】. It also makes teens feel excited about new experiences more keenly than adults do.

Besides, researchers found it makes social bonds especially rewarding. Generally, teenagers have an intense need to meet new people and think the peers may one day control the world they live in. As it’s still developing, a teenage brain can change to deal with new situations. 【4】. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends.

Some people think that this hunt for greater rewards can sometimes lead teenagers to go to extremes. 【5】. It means that teens are more likely, and less afraid, to try new things or to be independent. The scientists’ findings suggest that in the long run, the impulses of the teen brain are what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own lives successfully.

A.It is hard for the teens to adapt to new situations.

B.The result is the unpredictable actions seen in teens.

C.Therefore, it connects social rewards with more pleasure.

D.This makes the rewards seem more important than the risks.

E.However, it is of great benefit for teenagers to strive for rewards.

F.The teen brain inspires teenagers to help prepare for the school life.

G.These things were thought to be down to the foolishness of the young.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Here is a lesson that we’re going to be taught again and again in the coming years: Most animals are not just animals. They’re also 1 of microbes (微生物). If you really want to understand the animal, you also have to understand the world of microbes inside them. In other words, zoology is ecology.

Consider the western corn rootworm---- a beetle that’s a serious pest of corn in the US. The adults have strong preferences for laying eggs in corn fields, so that their underground larvae (幼虫) hatch into a 2 of corn roots. This life cycle depends on a continuous year-on-year supply of corn. Farmers can use this dependency against the rootworm, by planting soybean and corn in alternate years. These rotations (轮流) mean that rootworms lay eggs into corn fields but their larvae hatch among soybean, and die.

But the rootworms have 3 to this strategy by reducing their strong 4 for laying eggs in corn. These “rotation-resistant” females might lay among soybean fields, so their larvae hatch into a crop of corn.

There are almost certainly genetic differences that separate the rotation-resistant rootworms from their normal 5. Researchers at the University of Illinois began to study the genes of the bacteria in its gut () and found some answers, after focusing on the rootworm’s own genes and found that the results were mostly inconclusive.

“The bad guy in the story----the western corn rootworm---was actually part of a multi-species plot,” says Joe Spencer, who was part of the study. “No wonder it was hard to figure out what was happening. We were only looking at the most obvious 6 of the story.”

If you really want to understand the animal, you also have to understand the microbes. The rootworm’s gut bacteria are effectively another one of its organs, but an 7 flexible on that can change dramatically when 8 to a new food source. This allows the insects to adapt very quickly to environmental challenges, far more quickly than if they could only rely on mutations (突变) in their own genes.

Spencer says, “Modern agriculture has always underestimated the ability of pests to avoid pest control, and I think the 9 that pest insects are not alone in their efforts should give us some 10. There is a brand new tiny world out there inside every creature, and we need to start thinking seriously about it.”
