24、 Today there are about 7.5 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are many people to feed. We need more and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983,scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic( 遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified food, or GM food.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. Scientists make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases.A kind of rice will be grown, for example, which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM food because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM food is only one way of feeding people in 2050.There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. 26、 When I was in primary school, I got into a major argument(争论) with a boy named Michael in my class. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
I was convinced that I was right and he was wrong, and Michael was just as convinced that I was wrong and he was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson. She brought us up to the front of the class, placed Michael on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large, round object. I could clearly see that it was black. And she asked Michael what color the object was, “White,” he answered.
I couldn’t believe he said the object was white, when it was obviously black! Another argument started between Michael and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go stand where Michael was standing and told him to come and stand where I had been. We changed places, and now she asked me what the color of the object was. I had to answer, “White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides, and from his viewpoint(视角)it was white. Only from my side it was black.

27、Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in history. This year is your last chance to change your lifestyle to save the Earth.
Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about the polluted water and air on the Earth, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour dangerous chemicals (化学品)and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.
By the year 2200, the water on the Earth was completely polluted. People could no longer drink the water, and they had to use other types of liquids. Scientists said that in the future there might be too many people on the Earth. But not enough was done. So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all fish in the lakes and seas died because of pollution. Terrible wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.
By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the Earth. But only the rich were able to leave. Where did we go? Nowhere. And everywhere. You see scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe (宇宙)
